Wilbur was a basketball star on a team that went 53-25 during one of the most successful eras in AU basketball history. AU participated in the NIT in 1973 for the first time ever and regularly beat teams like Georgetown, St. John’s, George Washington and Temple. Wilbur had great basketball talent, but it was his toughness that made him a stand-out player. He set freshman and sophomore records for scoring during the 1971-73 seasons. As a freshman he averaged 28.6 points per game, netting 48 in one contest. As a sophomore, he averaged 23.9 points per game, including a 26 point effort against Louisville in AU’s first appearance as a Division I squad.

Thomas is fourth in career scoring average (19.8), seventh in all-time scoring (1,543) and seventh in all-time rebounding (803).

Thomas received his bachelor's from the Kogod School of Business in 1975.
