Stafford H. "Pop" Cassell Hall of Fame
Hugo “Dutch” Schulze took over as coach of the American basketball program in 1952. Schulze had the most success in his first season as his team went 15-8 and advanced all the way to the Mason-Dixon Conference title game before losing 65-62 to Loyola of Maryland in overtime. Schulze also served as an Athletic Director at American University.
Schulze received his bachelor's from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1941 and went on to receive his master's from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1964.
