Driving Directions
From Northeast of Washington (New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore):
Follow Interstate 95 south to Interstate 495 west toward Silver Spring. See below from Interstate I-495 (Capital Beltway).
From South or West of Washington (Norfolk, Richmond, Charlottesville):
Follow Interstate 95 north or Interstate 66 east to Interstate 495, the Capital Beltway. Follow Interstate 495 north. See below from Interstate I-495 (Capital Beltway).
From Northwest of Washington (western Pennsylvania, western Maryland)
Follow Interstate I-270 south. Where Interstate 270 divides, follow the right-hand branch toward Northern Va. (not towards Washington). Merge with Interstate I-495, the Capital Beltway, and soon afterwards take exit 39, River Road. See below from Interstate 495 (Capital Beltway).
From Interstate I-495 (Capital Beltway):
Take exit 39 and carefully follow the signs for River Road (Maryland Route 190) east toward Washington. Continue east on River Road to the fifth traffic light. Turn right onto Goldsboro Road (Maryland Route 614). At the first traffic light, turn left onto Massachusetts Avenue (Maryland Route 396). Continue on Massachusetts Avenue for about two miles, through the first traffic circle (Westmoreland Circle). At the fifth traffic light after Westmoreland Circle, make a right into the Glover Gate entrance. Go through one stop sign, under the Lydecker Tunnel and Bender Arena will be on your right side. After exiting the tunnel, make an immediate right turn into the Bender Arena parking garage. Reeves Field and the tennis courts are located directly behind Bender Arena and the Reeves Aquatic Center is located in Bender Arena. The William I Jacobs Recreational Complex is located just beyond Reeves Field.
From Nebraska Avenue:
Main Campus is located off of Nebraska Avenue at the just north on Massachusetts Avenue. Parking is located on East Campus, with entrances off of Nebraska Avenue by Ward Circle and (surface lot) or off of New Mexico Avenue (parking garage). Additional parking locations are in the SIS Parking Garage, located on Nebraska Avenue across from New Mexico Avenue, or in the Katzen Arts Center Garage, located off of Massachusetts Avenue across the street from the main entrance to campus. Additionally, visitor parking is available in the Sports Center Garage, located on main campus in between the Mary Graydon Center & the Sports Center, on the weekends and after 5:00pm during the week.
Metro & Bus
By Metro
The closest Metrorail station is the Tenleytown-AU stop on the Red line. From the station, you can take the AU shuttle that is located on the corner of 40th St. NW and Ablemarle St. NW, in front of the Whole Foods.
By Bus
DC Metro Bus routes M4, N2, N4, and N6 stop at the AU main campus near the Katzen Arts Center and/or Ward Circle.
Biking to Campus
AU is recognized as a bronze level Bicycle Friendly University by The League of American Bicyclists. There are several bicycle docks and repair stations on campus. See the Bicycle Rack Map for locations.
There are also multiple Capital Bikeshare stations adjacent to campus. The Ward Circle / American University station is located across the street from the Admissions Welcome Center on the second floor of the Katzen Arts Center.
Non-Affiliated Visitor Parking
Parking at American University is enforced by the Parking & Commuter Services Office Monday-Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Non-Affiliated visitors to campus within the enforcement hours are expected to park in one of several on-campus parking locations: Katzen Arts Center Garage, Spring Valley Building, School of International Service Garage, East Campus Surface Lot, or the East Campus Parking Garage. Parking rates are $2.00 per hour or $16.00 per day, and are paid via the Pay-As-You-Go Machines located in the elevator lobbies or in the front of the parking lot. You pay with your license plate number immediately after parking. Each of those parking locations can be found here on the Parking Map – INCLUDED.
Per the University’s Good Neighbor Policy, and in accordance with Washington, DC, all members of the University community - including students, faculty, staff, visitors and guests - are required to do one of the following while attending class, working, or visiting AU owned property:
- Park on campus and obtain a parking permit
- Purchase hourly/daily parking using the Pay-As-You-Go Machines
- Use public transportation
Violators are subject to citation, vehicle immobilization, tow and/or conduct referral.
Bus Parking
Due to campus construction, unfortunately, there is usually no available parking on-campus for visiting team buses. On weekends, and after 5:00pm, visiting team buses can ATTEMPT to park by the William I Jacobs Recreational Complex & Watkins Building, but there is no guarantee that there will be available space. For all weekday events held during the day, visiting team buses are asked to park in the Westbard Shopping Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The shopping center is located off of Westbard Avenue approximately two-miles north off of Massachusetts Avenue.
Passenger Van Parking
Visitors traveling to-campus in passenger vans may park in the East Campus Surface Lot, provided they given 72-hour notice to the Facilities & Operations staff, to distribute sufficient parking permits for the East Campus Surface Lot.
Officials Parking
A member of the Facilities & Operations staff will reach out to all scheduled game/match/meet officials approximately one-to-two weeks prior to their assigned scheduled event and will provide parking instructions and parking permits if needed.
