Athletics Internship & Student Workers Program

American University Athletics is accepting applications for available positions for the Summer 2025 and Fall 2025 semesters and 2025-26 Academic Year for undergraduate and post-graduate students in need of an internship, federal work study or part-time student employment.

Internships are potentially available in the following areas:


Undergraduates must be willing to work up to 10-15 hours per week around your class schedules, and be available to work weekend and night events as necessary.  Post-graduate opportunities require 25 per week.

Opportunities for AU Undergraduate Students in Communications
 

Communications Internships/Student Workers


An internship for the Communications Office as part of the American University Department of Athletics and Recreation can give individuals valuable exposure, training, and mentorship in order to prepare them for a career in intercollegiate athletics.

An internship can be customized to a specific individual's interests and/or academic credit requirements. Paid student workers positions are available with communications in which one can learn the day-to-day responsibilities such as producing game notes, writing previews/recaps, historical research, website updating, social media and more. Students need to be available for sporting event work on nights and weekends. Please fill out this interest form in order to be considered for an opportunity.

Video Intern

An individual who has specific interest in video journalism and video editing can take on a role in that area with the Communications Office. Responsibilities can include, but are not limited to, filming and editing "hype" or "intro" videos for specific teams, producing "Eye on the Eagles" features with various teams and student-athletes throughout the year, and serving as a sideline reporter for basketball games. 

Communications for AU Wrestling

This is a unique undergraduate internship opportunity to have full 360 access to the AU Wrestling program. You will have opportunities to travel (hotels and meals included) with the team during their away duals, and will be provided media credentials for the EIWA Tournament and NCAA Wrestling Championships. The individual for this internship opportunity must have proficient filming and video editing abilities to produce collateral to be used through all AU Wrestling communication channels. This individual should also have social media knowledge and experience. It is preferred that this individual have knowledge and/or experience with wrestling. Ownership of personal video equipment and video editing and producing software is preferable.

Opportunities for AU Undergraduate Students in Marketing


Areas of specialization include: Graphic Design, Game Day - Promotions and Fan Experience, Marketing and Ticket Sales/Box Office Operations, as well as Photography. Interns will report directly to full-time members of the AU Eagles staff, working closely with and playing key roles in building and fostering a culture of community and spirit at AU. See specialization track descriptions below. 

NOTE: CANDIDATES MUST RECEIVE ACADEMIC COURSE CREDIT FOR THE INTERNSHIP THROUGH THEIR AU SCHOOL/ADVISOR OR HAVE FEDERAL WORK STUDY HOURS IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE AND CONSIDERED. 


Qualifications: Passion to learn and gain valuable experience in marketing, business, or communications related fields, and an ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Candidates should have excellent relationship building, social, verbal, written, and oral communication skills.

Marketing and Promotions

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: assisting the Assistant Athletics Director and Assistant Director of Marketing/Ticket Manager with overall marketing and advertising of American University Athletics, execution of gameday marketing plans at home sporting events, assist in the advertising, collateral coordination, and entertainment and promotions for all sports, as well as the planning and coordination of AU Blue Crew student fan fests throughout the year, the execution of the Blue Crew Rewards program, coordination of volunteer undergraduate student workers both in the office and at events, oversight of campus email and social media marketing efforts to students and faculty/staff, and other duties as assigned in helping promote the AU Athletics brand and events across campus and to the greater DMV area.

Sponsorship Service & Fulfillment

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: assisting the Assistant Athletics Director with the AU Athletics’ corporate partnership program.  Chosen candidate will help ensure that all contractual obligations are fulfilled to sponsors creatively spreading the word of contests and promotional advertising placements throughout the year via email, social media and website communications, public address announcements, television, ESPN+ broadcasts, print and digital media and special events.  Intern will learn the entire sales and renewal process from start to finish. 

Ticket Office Operations and Sales/Servicing

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: assisting the Ticket Manager/Assistant Director of Marketing with all facets of the Athletics Ticket Office.  Chosen candidate will learn and participate in box office operations, customer service, will call and reconciliations at our ticketed sports of men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and wrestling as well as oversee outbound email campaigns to increase attendance and ticket revenues.  Intern will help oversee gameday staff and look to advance individual, season and group sales working to increase ticket revenues.

Graphic Design

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: assisting the Assistant Director of Creative Content with graphic design projects supporting the AU Athletics brand, marketing, sales and public relations efforts.  Chosen candidate will help design content for videoboards and courtside LED displays, email and website, social media, print publications and advertisements, as well as sales materials and special event collateral exciting AU constituents to become more involved with our program throughout the year.  Candidate will assist videoboard operation, photos and videography on gamedays.

Photography

Photographers are responsible for attending AU Athletic events and capturing fan experience, in-game promotions, giveaways, sponsorship marketing, etc. Photographers will also download, sort, edit, and label pictures post-event for use in a variety of communications channels. Ownership of personal DSLR camera and equipment is mandatory.

Opportunities for Post-Undergraduate Interns

Preferred Qualifications: Previous student work experience within a collegiate athletic marketing, ticketing, or development office, or with a professional sports organization; experience with Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop and InDesign is preferred.  Video shooting and editing skills are a plus.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in sports management, marketing, business or communications related field, ability to work independently with minimal supervision and excellent relationship building, social, verbal and written and oral communication skills.
