Kuykendall receives this honor as one of the most decorated and accomplished student-athletes in the men's soccer program's history. He ranks in AU's top 10 in the three primary offensive categories; second in career assists, fourth in career points and seventh in career goals.

A two-time All-Region selection and a two-time All-Patriot League selection, Kuykendall was also named Patriot League Player of the Year in 2004. After being drafted by D.C. United in the Major League Soccer supplemental draft of 2005, he played for both United and the New York/New Jersey MetroStars.

He returned to Reeves Field as an assistant coach from 2010 to 2013, helping lead the Eagles to three regular-season championships and an impressive 17-7-4 record in conference games. Shawn joins his father Kurt Kuykendall in the Cassell Hall of Fame, becoming the only father-son combination in this illustrious group of American University greats.

Kuykendall received his bachelor's degree from the School of Communication in 2005. He sadly lost his battle with thymic cancer on March 12, 2014. A non-profit organization supporting the fight against pediatric cancer called Kuykenstrong was formed in Kuykendall's memory following his death.
