James Monkman is the first golfer in American University to earn All-America status, getting honorable mention in 1971, and is one of only two golfers to earn the distinction. He led the Eagles to their lone team title at the 1970 Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship and captured the first of his two individual league titles. AU scored 787 to beat Temple by eight strokes in the 1971 team competition. Monkman played in the No. 1 position for the Eagles in all four of his seasons. He came to American after capturing the Delaware State Amateur title as a high school senior. He graduated from the Kogod School of Business with a bachelor's degree in 1971.
