John Wakefield led the Eagles to the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships during his senior season, where American defeated Loyola (Md.), 55-54, to earn its first conference championship since the 1945-46 season. The team posted an overall record of 70-39 in his four years at American, and went 23-3 in the Mason-Dixon conference in his final two seasons.

Wakefield received his bachelor's degree from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1950.
