Bart was a captain for the baseball and basketball teams at American. He also lettered in football and tennis. During the ’42-43 season, Bart was runner-up in the scoring title in basketball, averaging 17.5 points per game. In 1947, Bart was awarded the Jack Dempsey Trophy as outstanding athlete on the American University campus.

Off the court, Bart pursued a career in the Navy flying fighter planes and working for the Naval Air Transport Service. While completing his service, he played for the Iowa Seahawks, winners of the mythical service championship in 1945-46.

He returned to AU following his Naval service to complete his degree.

Fugler received his bachelor's degree from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1948.
