“Ish” played basketball during his years at AU and was known for his great ball-handling skills and fierce competitiveness on the court. He was the first player to reach 1,200 points and remains on the all-time scoring list in AU history with 1,371. As a freshman, he scored 238 points and was chosen for the Mason-Dixon Conference Tournament team.

In his junior year, he was captain of the varsity squad and was again chosen to the Conference and All-District teams. Ish had very large hands, which helped him lead his team in rebounds and assists during his senior year.

Ishman received his bachelor's degree from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1951.
