Sergio Lopez transferred from Indiana University to American when he was already an Olympic bronze medalist, having won the medal at the 1988 Barcelona Games in the 200 breaststroke. He broke a school record in his first-ever meet as an Eagle in the 100 breaststroke, and soon after that he helped the team defeat defending conference champ East Carolina University in a dual meet. Keeping up with his record-breaking style, Lopez broke the school and conference record in the 200 freestyle against the Pirates.

Later that year, Lopez became the first swimmer in school history to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships with a qualifying time in the 200 breaststroke. During his collegiate career, Lopez earned nine All-America honors in the breaststroke and IM events. He still holds American University records in both the 500 freestyle and 200 breaststroke that he set in 1991. In the 1992 Olympic Games, Lopez finished fourth for Spain in the 200 breaststroke.

From 2005-07, Lopez was the head men's and women's swimming coach at West Virginia University. In 2007 he became the head swimming coach at The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla., and coached several swimmers onto the U.S. national team. In 2015 he was appointed head coach of Singapore Swimming as well as an adviser coach of the coaching academy of the Singapore Sports Institute. In 2018, Lopez Miro was hired as Virginia Tech's head coach for the both swimming and diving programs.

Lopez received his bachelor's degree from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1992.
