Mike
Cannon of the men's wrestling team has been named the
American University Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO
after two strong performances in the team's two meets this past
weekend against Duke and Ohio.
On Saturday against Duke, the two-time All-American pinned Diego
Bencomo in just 2:27. Cannon scored a quick takedown and used a
cradle to score three back points for American. Bencomo scored an
escape point after the near fall to move the score to 5-1 but was
taken down shortly after by a Cannon single leg. After the
takedown, Cannon was able to turn Bencomo and put both his
shoulders to the mat at the 2:27 mark. Cannon's fall helped
American to a 38-7 victory over the Blue Devils.
Cannon continued to control the mat on Sunday, recording the
fastest fall of the day. Facing Ohio's Brian Discoll, Cannon shot
in on a single leg off the opening whistle before turning Discoll
midway through the period to score the fall at 1:46.

Cannon improved to 16-1 on the season with his two victories.
Ranked #4 at 184 lbs. in the country, Cannon has earned six wins by
fall, two by tech falls, and six by major decision.
American will return to the mats in Bender Arena on Tuesday,
January 26, at 6:00 p.m. against Drexel in the team's annual
‘Bender Takedown' event. Fans unable to attend the match in
person can catch all of the action live on the Web via a
subscription to Eagles Vision TV.
