Junior Brooke
Sheppard of the women's soccer team has been named the
American University Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO,
Department of Athletics officials announced Monday. Sheppard
finished the week with four points, one goal and two assists, in
victories against Patriot League foes Holy Cross and Army.
Sheppard's three-point performance led the women's soccer team
to a 2-0 victory over Holy Cross on Friday at Reeves Field. After a
scoreless first half, Sheppard helped the Eagles get on the board
by passing the ball to Kelsey
Brasher, who scored her sixth goal of the year. Less
than six minutes after Sheppard assisted on the first goal of the
game, she scored her first goal of the season off a pass from
freshman Carleigh
Morba. This was the only shot the midfielder from
Wilmington, Del., recorded in either match this week.
The Eagles continued their hot play on Sunday, defeating Army,
2-1. In the 28th minute, freshman Kristin
Piorun played a ball down the right side of the field
to Sheppard. She was able to gather it and fire it across the
middle to Patricia
Bailey for the short-range goal.
Sheppard currently leads the team with five assists. She helped
the Eagles move to 3-0 in Patriot League play, only the second time
in program history they have started perfect in their opening three
matches of conference play.
American will hit the road for each of its next three Patriot
League matchups, beginning this Saturday, October 17 for a 7 p.m.
kick at Colgate. The Eagles will then travel to Lafayette and
Lehigh before ending the season at home versus Navy on October 31.
