Cannon has been named the American University Student
Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO. Cannon, the #4 ranked
wrestler in the country at 184 lbs., helped the Eagles earn a 2-1
record at the 2009 Journeymen /BRUTE Northeast Duals on Saturday
while going a perfect 3-0 on the day.
Cannon recorded bonus points in all three of his victories over
the weekend. In the first round against #10 Central Michigan,
Cannon pinned Raylen Davis just 1:51 into the match. Despite his
individual victory, the Eagles fell to the Chippewas 29-12.
American defeated Michigan in the second round of the day,
20-19. The Eagles were down 14-13 until Cannon earned a 10-2
major decision over the Wolverines' Hunter Collins. His
victory gave the Eagles a 17-14 margin, allowing for the team's
20-19 win.
The Eagles finished the day victorious with a dominating win
over Northern Colorado, 40-4. Cannon contributed in the win
as he earned his second fall of the day over the Bears' Eric
Brennan 28 seconds into the match.
After his victories on Saturday, Cannon is now 7-0 on the young
season. His career record of 99-16 places him fourth all-time
at American.
The Eagles will return to action December 29-30 at the 2009
Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill. American placed
eighth at last year's tournament, making it the university's
highest ranking, where Cannon won an individual title at 174
lbs.
