Field hockey's Annie-Meike
de Wiljes has been named the American University
Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO after her stellar
performance this weekend at the Terrapin Invitational in College
Park, Md. De Wiljes led the Eagles in scoring with six points (2 G,
2 A) as the Eagles defeated Towson, 8-1, and #13 Penn State, 3-1.
The 2008 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year scored two
goals and notched an assist in the team's win against Towson. Both
of her goals and the assist came off of penalty corners for the
Eagles. Against 13th ranked Penn State, senior Rachel
Carney deflected a de Wiljes shot to score her first
goal of the year and crediting de Wiljes with an assist.
Although she was a strong offensive power throughout the
tournament, de Wiljes also helped anchor a defense that allowed two
goals all weekend and limited its opponents to a total of nine
shots and six penalty corners. De Wiljes was named First Team
All-Mid-Atlantic and First Team All-Patriot League for her
defensive efforts in 2008.
The Eagles will make their home debut on Friday, Sept. 18,
against California at 3 p.m. at the Jacobs Recreational Complex.
The game can be seen live on the new Eagles Vision TV channel
featuring multiple camera angles, a live scoreboard and analysis
