Sophomore Mikaila Weaver of
the women's soccer team has been named the first American
University Student Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO for the
2009-10 school year. Weaver led the Eagles to a 2-0 weekend and
scored the game winning goal in overtime against Bryant on Sunday.
Just 1:16 into the overtime period, freshman Kirstin Piorun
fired a shot at the Bryant goalkeeper, which was saved and
deflected right back to Piorun. She found Weaver at the opposite
goal post, and Weaver finished the job as she fired a shot into the
back of the net, giving the Eagles a 2-1 victory.
This was Weaver's second career goal and her first goal of the
season. Her last goal came against Ohio University on August 29,
2008. Weaver finished the weekend with four shots on goal and
helped anchor the Eagles defense which only allowed one goal in two
games.
American will play at Reeves Field for each of its next two
matches. On Wednesday, September 2, the Eagles will entertain
Richmond at 4:30 p.m. A week later, on September 9, American will
return to Reeves for a 4 p.m. showdown versus Maryland. Both
matches can be watched live on Eagles Vision TV, which can be accessed through
AUeagles.com.
