Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO: Daniel Shannon

Junior Daniel Shannon of the men's soccer team has been named American University Student Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO, Department of Athletics officials announced Tuesday.  Shannon scored both goals in the Eagles 2-1 victory over No. 19 George Mason on Saturday in the D.C. College Cup.

Shannon was named Tournament Most Valuable Player in the D.C. College Cup, which the Eagles won after defeating George Washington and George Mason.  His two-goal effort versus George Mason matched his career-high, which also occurred in American's 2-1 victory over Princeton on September 12, 2008.

In the 23rd minute, Shannon scored his first goal of the match, firing a rocket past the goalkeeper from 30 yards out. In the 87th minute, after junior David Menzie put a shot on goal, Shannon was able to put the rebound into the back of the net for his second goal of the match.

Last season, Shannon tied for second on the team with three goals.  In 2007, he led the team in goals (three), assists (two), points (eight) and game-winning goals (three).

American, currently ranked 23rd in the country, will open its home slate on Friday, September 11, at 3 p.m. against Princeton. The match will be broadcast live on the new Eagles Vision TV channel, featuring multiple camera angles, a live scoreboard and analysis from a studio broadcast team and fieldside reporters.
