Women's basketball student-athlete Michelle
Kirk has been selected as the American University
Student Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO, Department of
Athletics officials announced Monday. Kirk led the Eagles to two
victories this past week, including a career-best 32-point
performance against defending Patriot League champion Lehigh on
Saturday.
Kirk, a Preseason All-Patriot League selection, recorded a
game-high 19 points on Monday night in American's 57-46 win over
Maryland-Eastern Shore. She was eight-of-11 from the free throw
line, and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and had three assists.
On Saturday, Kirk recorded one of the best individual efforts in
recent program history, scoring a career-high 32 points on 10-of-21
shooting from the floor in AU's 69-65 overtime victory over Lehigh.
She played all 45 minutes, while knocking down a career-best five
three-pointers on nine attempts. She was also a perfect
seven-of-seven from the free throw line. Kirk's 32-point effort is
the fifth-highest single-game output in program history, and is the
most since Chanel Hunt had 34 on February 11, 2003 against Navy.
Kirk and the Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday,
February 13 against Bucknell. Tip time from Bender Arena is slated
for 7 p.m.
