Indoor Track Continues Record-Breaking Streak at Liberty Open

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The indoor track team continued breaking records at the Liberty Open (Feb. 7-8). On Friday, Freshman Tamara Dorval wasted no time lowering the school record she set in the 60 meters last weekend, running 7.76 seconds to start the meet. Her time currently stands at 10th in the Patriot League this year. Sophomore Lorelei Bangit followed that up by shattering her school record in the 200 meters from two weeks ago, running 25.06.

In their third meet of the season, the Eagles set 28 personal bests and added 14 new times to the program's top-10 list.
  • Freshman Brandon Williams ran a personal-best time of 7.20 seconds in the 60 meters, lowering his seventh-best time in AU's record book. Freshman Darcy Scheiner lowered her sixth-best time in the event to 8.28 seconds.
  • In the 200 meters, sophomore Jason Omari-Anim returned from the 60 meters to run an indoor personal best of 23.02 seconds, tying the sixth-best time in AU history. On the women's side, following Bangit's new school record, freshmen Zoe Clark and Lara Gin lowered their third and sixth all-time marks, running new personal bests of 25.76 and 26.40 seconds. Freshman Tamara Dorval, fresh off lowering her record in the 60 meters, moved up to ninth all-time in the 200 with a time of 26.74.
  • Freshman Zack Zerbe placed third in a 50-person field in the 1k, running 2:31.01 in his debut at the distance. Both added their names to the top-10 list, Ianello running 2:59.03 and Tianga running 2:59.79. The pair were within .2 seconds of each other in the 800 meters at George Mason last weekend, also running PRs in the event.

Grad student Bryn Underwood raced against her twin sister, Reagan Underwood of Liberty, running 5:07.38 to her sister's 5:08.83.

Coaches' Corner
The team had another great weekend of racing at Liberty," said head coach Sean Graham. "Once again our athletes raced aggressively; pushing paces, setting records, top 5 marks and PRs, with many winning or getting on the podium again. It was a very solid, all around team performance.

"On the women's side Tamara once again lowered her newly earned school record in the 60m, now down to 7.76, kicking off the meet nicely. Lucia (Ianello) and Kirah (Tianga) raced to big PR's in the 1000m placing third and fourth respectively. Luci came back with a PR in the mile for fourth in that event. Lorelei (Bangit) had a very strong 400 for second overall in 56.1 and Lara (Gin) earned a massive PR in the same event down to 57.88 for second all-time and Zoe Clark now down to 58.2 for third all time. Kate Riley and Grace Kirk had impressive days in the 800 with Grace lowering her PR down to 2:17, and Kate dropping her PR by three seconds down to 2:16 with a convincing heat win. Sophia Staiger wrapped up the day with a hard fought 3000 in which she came away with over a 10 second PR of 10:23.

"On the men's side, they were all over the podium positions as well. The guys won the 800, came third in the 1000m, won the Mile, came second in the 3000m and fourth in the 5000m. Carver (Morgan) had a very strong race to match his PR of 1:50 in the 800m with a big close. Danny O'Neill had a big PR in the mile; a strategic race in which he ran away from the field the last 200m for the win. Ty Parker, had a very well executed debut in the 3000m for a massive PR; he managed the early portion of the race well then pressed to the lead with about 600 meters to go to keep the pace moving, just getting nipped the last 50 or so meters for second.

"All in all it was a very solid additional step forward through the regular season. Racing aggressively for wins and top-five positions, while also taking home PR's in this part of the season and training block is great. We've got an exciting few weeks ahead of us with two big opportunities this coming week in Boston and back at Liberty, then we begin final prep for the Patriot League Champs at the end of February."

Next Up
The track team will split next weekend. Some Eagles will head to Boston to compete at Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational, while some will return to Liberty for the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational on February 14-15.
