Wrestling Has Six Place-Winners, Three Automatic NCAA Qualifiers at EIWA Championships

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Three tickets to the NCAA Championships were punched by American University wrestlers at the 116th EIWA Championships, with redshirt juniors Kizhan Clarke, Gage Curry and Tanner Harvey all earning automatic qualifying spots with their performances. Harvey led the way with a third-place finish while Clarke and Curry both took fourth.

As a team, AU placed ninth in the 17-team field with host Lehigh winning its third straight team title. In total, six Eagles earned podium finishes to match the success of last year. In addition to Harvey (184), Clarke (149) and Curry (125), Niko Camacho (285) placed seventh and Tim Fitzpatrick (165) and Anthony Wokasch (174) both placed eighth.

The NCAA bids will be announced on Tuesday, March 10, with the complete bracket released in a 6 p.m. NCAA Selection Show on Wednesday. Redshirt senior Sal Profaci could earn an at-large bid but will need to await the committee's decision on Tuesday.

DAY TWO RECAP
  • Tanner Harvey went 4-1 overall at the championships and saved his most exciting finish for last.
  • Facing Army's Noah Stewart in the third-place bout, Harvey led just 2-1 heading into the third period. Stewart scored a late takedown to force overtime at 3-3, but Harvey recovered with a strong move that got him a takedown and back points for a 9-3 victory.
  • Harvey adds to his EIWA hardware after taking fourth place a year ago, and will make his second appearance at the NCAA Championships in as many seasons at AU.
  • To start the day, Harvey lost 3-2 in the championship semifinals to Lou DePrez, falling to the Binghamton wrestler by a narrow margin for the second time this season and second time in two years at the EIWAs. Harvey appeared to get a takedown in the final second, but a challenge was not successful.
  • The consolation semifinals saw Harvey get some redemption. He set the tone with two first-period takedowns and went on to defeat Princeton's Travis Stefanik, 13-6 to assure his NCAA berth and earn a chance to wrestle for third place.
  • Gage Curry (125) got the Eagles started with a win on day two, shutting out Hofstra's Dylan Ryder, 5-0. Curry had a late takedown in the first, rode Ryder all the way through the second, got an escape in a third and a last-second takedown to put a bow on it.
  • In the consolation semifinals, Curry scored early takedowns and another at the end for a 9-4 win vs. Cornell's Dominic LaJoie to get to the third-place match and earn his third consecutive NCAA berth.
  • Curry kept it much lower-scoring vs. Lehigh's Brandon Paetzell than he had earlier in the season, but lost 4-1 to finish fourth overall. It marks Curry's third top-four finish in his three seasons competing at the EIWA Championships (3rd in 2019, 4th in 2018 and 2020).
  • The championship semifinals pitted top-seeded Kizhan Clarke (149) against three-time All-American Matt Kolodzik from Princeton, and Clarke wasn't able to take control in a 6-0 loss by decision.
  • He recovered in the consolation semifinals against PJ Ogunsanya from Army, who he beat for a third time this season. The only point of the match was an escape for Clarke in the second period, with his 1-0 win sending him to the third-place match and earning him his first-ever spot at NCAAs.
  • Clarke finished out the weekend with a loss to three-time NCAA qualifier Jared Prince of Navy by a score of 3-1, and took fourth overall.
  • Niko Camacho (285) lost in the consolation quarters, but finished his weekend with a 7-4 win over Bucknell's Brandon Stokes to earn a seventh-place podium finish. It was 4-4 early in the third period but Camacho scored a takedown and then rode out the rest of the period for another point.
  • Tim Fitzpatrick (165) and Anthony Wokasch (174), who both battled to stay alive on Friday night, lost their consolation quarterfinal matches on Saturday morning, sending them into seventh-place matches. Neither came out on top in those, but both placed eighth to earn podium spots for the first time at the EIWA Championships.
HEAD COACH TEAGUE MOORE
  • "I'm very happy for our six place-winners. Tanner Harvey earned a victory over an opponent he had lost to the last three times they met. Kizhan Clarke finished fourth, improving his placement from last year's EIWAs. Gage Curry once again qualifies through to the NCAAs. Niko Camacho, Tim Fitzpatrick and Anthony Wokasch all wrestled above their seeds. We look forward to the NCAA Championships and are excited to get back to work in preparation for nationals."
