FAIRFAX, Va. – The American University track team ended the regular season with several personal bests at George Mason on Friday (Feb. 21). Seven more Eagles put their names on the program's top-10 list as the squad approaches the Patriot League Championships hosted by Navy next weekend (Mar. 1-2).
- Freshman Tamara Dorval and sophomore Lorelei Bangit finished second and third in the 60 meters. Dorval ran 7.77, just .02 seconds off her school record, while Bangit ran 7.85, third AU all-time.
- All three AU athletes in the men's mile ran personal bests. Freshman Daniel Messer led the group with a PR of 4:18.06, followed closely by freshman Zack Zerbe in 4:18.37. Freshman Jaden Frederick ran a PR of 4:25.07.
- Junior Grace Kirk won the 400 meters in a personal best of 1:01.46, good for 10th on AU's all-time list.
- Freshmen Catherine Hany and Kara Langbaum went 1-2 in the 800 meters, both running personal bests. Hany's performance of 2:19.05 puts her at ninth AU all-time, while Langbaum ran a PR of 2:19.21.
- Freshman Barak Goldstein placed second in the 800 in a two-second PR of 1:54.77.
- Grad student Bryn Underwood broke into AU's top-10 list with a massive PR in the 3,000 meters. She placed second in the event with a time of 10:08.51, a 27-second personal best.
- In the men's 3k, all three AU athletes PRed. Sophomore Hayden Hauser ran an 11-second personal best of 8:48.55. Freshman Jacob West broke nine minutes in his first time racing the event, running 8:59.34. Sophomore Jack Chandler ran a seven-second PR of 9:13.88.
- Freshman Zoe Clark again improved her personal best in the 200 meters, running 25.63 to place second in the event. She still stands at third all-time for the Eagles. Earlier in the meet, Clark posted a school record in the long jump with an indoor PR of 4.83 meters (15'-10.25"). Freshman Darcy Scheiner jumped 4.49 meters (14'-8.75"), a second all-time mark for the Eagles.
- Freshman Lara Gin tied the school record in the high jump, placing second in the event with a PR jump of 1.60 meters (5'-3").
Coaches' Corner
"I was very pleased with how the team competed this weekend," said head coach
Sean Graham. "This meet serves a few purposes — for the sprinters, it keeps us in race rhythm and allows us to fine tune some race specific needs. For the middle distance and distance athletes it's a good tune up in a typically shorter event in preparation for next weekend's championship.
"We got some great results out of those strategies yesterday. Tamara and Lorelei and Brandon all advanced to the finals of the 60 and ran around their PR times. In the 200 we had some very good races by Brandon, Zoe and
Chloee Dotts returning to the track in very strong fashion.
"Catherine and Kara finished neck-and-neck in the 800 for first and second. Barak had an excellent 800 with about a two-second PR for second. The men's milers — Daniel, Zack, and Jaden — each came away with PRs competing aggressively and the women's 3k showed a massive PR and very gutsy racing by new team member
Bryn Underwood. The men's 3k ran well too, with
Jacob West's return to the track and Hayden and Jack coming away with nice PRs.
"Along with some great workouts earlier in the day by those not competing this weekend, we're coming into the Championship very well prepared."
