Swim & Dive Wraps up Three Strong Days at the Patriot Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va. – The American University swimming & diving teams capped off three days of the Patriot Invitational at George Mason University with the distance group putting up multiple top-16 swims across the board. The Eagles finished up the night with swimmers in the B-final of every event.

Notable Women's Results
  • The freshman pair of Demetra Bicos and Mallorie Jeremiah finished eighth and 10th, respectively, in the 1,650 freestyle. Bicos swam a lifetime best of 17:22.07 and Jeremiah posted a lifetime best of her own in 17:32.19. Both freshmen now make their first appearance on the AU Top 16 list for the 1650, at eighth and 13th, respectively.
  • Sophomore Ella Shifflett, finished right behind the freshman pair in 13th place with a lifetime best of 17:34.00. This improves Shifflett's ranking on the AU Top 16 list to 14th. 
  • Sophomore Kate Williams swam in the final heat of the 1,650 tonight in a time of 17:21.14, placing seventh overall but coming short of her own PR.
  • Junior Gabby Kaczorowski and senior Laura Laux finished 20th and 21st in the 200 backstroke. Laux finished in a lifetime best of 2:08.42.
  • Standout freshman Brooke Vos swam in another B final for the 200 back, placing 13th. Her new lifetime best of 2:03.84 ranks her ninth all-time on the AU Top 16 list. 
  • Senior Amaya Tomma finished sixth overall with a new lifetime best of 2:02.10, tying her for fifth all-time on the AU Top 16 list. 
  • Sophomore Lian Jeong Engle won the B-final of the 100 freestyle, placing ninth overall with a time of 51.36. 
  • The C final saw Piper Crosby, Grace Gilbert, and Dylan Moulton all within tenths of a second of one another, placing 18th, 19th and 20th, respectively. Crosby finished in 52.17, Gilbert in 52.24, and Moulton in 52.31. 
  • Bicos rounded out the B final swimmers, finishing 16th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.46. Her prelims time of 2:24.08 was good enough for what is now 12th all-time on AU's Top 16.
  • Jeremiah just out-touched senior Katie Yoo in the C final, with the pair taking 21st and 22nd, respectively. Jeremiah finished with a time of 2:23.70 (11th all-time) and Yoo swam a 2:24.14 (13th all-time). 
  • Isabel McGovern posted a time of 2:04.62 to finish fourth in the 200 fly, the highest placement for the Eagles on day three.  
  • The women ended the night with a sixth-place finish for Mimi Watts, Jeong Engle, Gilbert and Crosby in the 400 free relay. The group's time of 3:26.04 places them second all-time at AU.
  • Marin Priddy, McGovern, Lurilla Bereveskos and Moulton made up AU's B team in the 400 free relay that finished in 3:29.38 which ranks eighth all-time at AU.
Notable Men's Results 
  • The distance duo of freshman Zachary Rothman and sophomore Brent Hinckley had the highest placings for the men in the 1,650 freestyle in seventh and eighth place, respectively. Both went lifetime bests with Rothman swimming a 16:00.70 and Hinckley at 16:01.86. Those times put Rothman at eighth and Hinckley at 10th all-time on the AU Top 16 list.
  • The trio of Ryan Pursley, Henry Bysshe and Cole Coffman partnered up to finish 14th, 15th and 16th, respectively in the 200 backstroke. Pursley finished in a lifetime best of 1:54.59, Bysshe with a lifetime best 1:54.88, and Coffman with a time of 1:56.14.
  • Colin Clough finished 13th in the finals of the 100 free in 45.95. Clough's prelims time of 45.79 was just one-tenth off his own PR.
  • Connor Florence finished the 100 free in 46.62 to tie for 22nd place. 
  • Sophomore Kyler Alcebar had the highest placement for the men on day three, taking 14th in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:09.68. Senior Henry Harrison joined Alcebar in the B final, finishing 16th. 
  • The men finished the individual events for the night with Daniel Coughlin, Madan Morris, Ryan Tiffany and Luke Martens in the B final of the 200 fly. Coughlin had the best finish of the trio, taking 11th, while Morris took 12th, Tiffany placed 13th and Martens took 15th. Coughlin finished in 1:51.68, which improves his 10th-place spot on the AU Top-16 list. Morris went 1:52.18 in the prelims to now take the 11th spot all-time, while Martens' prelims time of 1:52.44 ranks 12th, and Tiffany's prelims time of 1:52.49 ranks 13th.
  • The diving trio of Griffin Batt, Sean Memon, and Gray Miller won the team springboard event with a score of 280.90. In the event, each diver completes two dives in a six-dive set. The dives must consist of three on 1-meter and three on 3-meter.
  • The last race of the night for the Eagles was the foursome of Clough, Aidan Delehanty, Lucas Standridge and Florence winning the B final of the 400 free relay in a time of 3:04.86 which ranks ninth all-time at AU.

Next Up
  • The team will send Clough and Watts to compete at the Toyota U.S. Open Championship in Greensboro, N.C. from December 4-7.
  • Clough will compete in the 100 breaststroke, while Watts will compete in the 100 fly, 100 back, 100 free and 50 free. 
  • This is the first time the meet has been hosted in short course yards (SCY) in over 10 years, giving the duo the ability to better their seeding come February for the Patriot League Championship.
