One School Record, 19 Top Times for Swim & Dive on Day One of the Patriot Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va. - One new school record and numerous personal records were the highlight of day one for American University swimming & diving at the George Mason Patriot Invitational. The Eagles combined for an impressive total of 19 new top times that rank among the top 16 all-time in program history. 

Notable Women's Results
  • American finished the night with a school-record time of 3:43.95 in the 400 medley relay, taking third place. Piper Crosby's lead-off 100 backstroke of 56.38 ranks sixth all-time at AU on the Top 16 list of personal bests, and she was followed by Marin Priddy (breaststroke), Mimi Watts (butterfly), and Lian Jeong Engle (freestyle).
  • The women started off the first night of finals by taking fifth in 200 free relay, as Watts, Jeong Engle, Grace Gilbert, and Crosby went 1:33.12 which ranks second-best all-time at AU, besting last year's Patriot Invite relay by over a second. 
  • Improving 14.73 seconds over her best time of the season so far in the 500 free prelims, Kate Williams went 4:58.62 to place fourth as well as move up six spots to fourth on the all-time list of personal bests in program history. She later went 5:03.78 in the finals to finish eighth overall.
  • Demetra Bicos dropped almost three seconds from the prelims to the finals in the 500 free, taking 12th overall in 4:59.85 which ranks seventh all-time on AU's list of personal bests. Mallorie Jeremiah also made the Top 16 list with new PR of 5:04.18 which placed 21st overall and puts her 14th on AU's Top 16.
  • In the 200 IM, Isabel McGovern won the B final (ninth overall) in 2:05.41 which ranks fourth all-time among personal bests at American. Katie Yoo's prelims time in that event of 2:06.69 moved her up to seventh all-time on the Top 16 list. Brooke Vos was also in the mix in the 200 IM, with her prelims time of 2:07.47 being a PR, earning her a spot in the B final, and now ranking 12th all-time at American. Gabby Kaczorowski's time of 2:07.60 in the C final puts her on the Top 16 list in 13th all-time.
  • Jeong Engle swam a PR of 23.39 for ninth in the 50 free prelims, advancing to the B final and moving up from fourth to third all-time at AU. She later won the B final in 23.41 for ninth place overall.
  • Crosby finished with a PR of 24.00 in the 50 free prelims to rank 10th all-time at AU. Priddy finished one-hundredth of a second faster in the finals than the prelims, taking 19th overall in 24.05 which ranks 13th all-time at AU. 
Notable Men's Results
  • Starting off finals for the men was the 200 freestyle relay team of Colin Clough, Aidan Delehanty, Connor Florence, and Charlie St. Louis who went 1:22.50 to place seventh in the event and rank sixth all-time at AU.
  • Luke Martens finished sixth overall in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:33.88 that ranks 13th among personal bests in program history. His time dropped over half a second from the prelims, helping him move up a spot in the A final.
  • Zachary Rothman had a tough swim in the prelims of the 500 free, but was good enough to advance to the C final where he dropped nearly six seconds to go 4:33.54, ranking 11th all-time at AU. He placed 17th overall, but on time alone he would have finished seventh in the A final.
  • Brent Hinckley finished 11th in the prelims of the 500 free with a PR of 4:36.18, advancing him to the B final where he dropped time to go 4:34.73.
  • Clough went 20.56 in the 50 free prelims, a new PR that moves him up to third all-time on AU's top 16 list of personal bests. He later went 20.64 for eighth place in the A final.
  • Delehanty went from 11th to seventh all-time at American in the 50 free with a PR of 20.70 to tie for the B final win in that event, getting ninth overall.
  • The night concluded with the 400 medley relay as AU's "A" team took sixth in 3:24.01 which ranks 11th all-time at American. The group included Ryan Pursley (backstroke), Clough (breaststroke), Daniel Coughlin (butterfly) and St. Louis (freestyle).

Next Up
  • The Eagles will be back at the Patriot Invitational for day two on Friday. Contested events will include the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter diving, the 200 medley relay, and the 800 free relay.
