Wrestling Welcomes CSU Bakersfield, Central Michigan, and Campbell for Chippewa Challenge on Sunday

WASHINGTON - The American University wrestling team continues its five-meet homestand this Sunday, Jan. 26 at Bender Arena, as the Eagles host CSU Bakersfield, Campbell, and Central Michigan for the fourth annual Chippewa Challenge. All four head coaches were wrestlers for the Central Michigan Chippewas under recently-retired head coach Tom Borrelli.

Hospitality Offerings

  • AU Athletics is excited to introduce a new match day hospitality offering.
  • In addition to the concessions menu from Gregorio's Trattoria, fans can now partake in a match-side (or courtside) hospitality offering featuring fun game day snacks and beverages, including a selection of beer, wine, and seltzers for purchase.
  • Fans must be 21 years old to enter, and food and beverages must remain in the hospitality area.
  • Come join us on the mezzanine level for action-packed wrestling, and your favorite food and drink.
A Family Affair
  • The Chippewa Challenge brings together both family and past teammates for a reunion each year at one of the four participating schools, featuring four teams that are coached by disciples of the legendary Tom Borrelli.
  • The 14-time MAC Coach of the Year retired as Central Michigan's wrestling coach after the 2023-24 season as of the highest-regarded figures in college wrestling. Ben Bennet, a former four-time All-American under Borrelli, took the reigns in 2025 after serving as an assistant on his staff for 11 seasons.
  • Fourth-year AU head coach Jason Borrelli is the son of Tom Borrelli. Jason wrestled for his dad and is a 2005 graduate of CMU.
  • Jason was a MAC champion for CMU at 133 pounds as a junior.
  • Campbell head coach Scotti Sentes is a 2013 graduate of Central Michigan, and CSU Bakersfield head coach Luke Smith is a 2008 CMU graduate.
  • Both Sentes and Smith were two-time MAC champions at CMU. Sentes was also a two-time All-American.
  • Assistant coaches for both Campbell and Central Michigan are also graduates of Tom Borrelli's CMU teams.
Inside the Series
  • AU is 1-3 in the history of the Chippewa Challenge, winning it in 2023 by 3-0 at Campbell's Gore Arena in Buis Creek, N.C.
  • Campbell won last year's Challenge, going 3-0 on the day at the Icardo Center at CSU Bakersfield.
  • The Eagles hold a 3-1 record against CSU Bakersfield all-time, 1-8 record against Central Michigan, and 7-2 record against Campbell.
What to Know about American
  • The Eagles are scheduled to face CSU Bakersfield (noon), Campbell, (2 p.m.), and Central Michigan (4 p.m.).
  • AU took one of two dual meets last weekend at home, taking a thrilling 21-20 over Harvard on Friday and falling to Army 34-4 on Sunday. The results brought their overall record to 6-4, and EIWA record to 0-2.
  • The win over Harvard came in comeback fashion, as Harvard led 16-3 after wins in four of the first five bouts. Thanks to a dominant 15-1 major decision from #33 Will Jarrell, the  Eagles were able to complete a comeback to tie visiting Harvard and then get the win on criteria.
  • Caleb Campos posted a crucial pin in the dual to cut Harvard's lead from ten to four, and Kaden Milheim, Raymond Lopez, and Carsten Rawls all won bouts by decision to help mount the comeback.
  • Both #33 Jarrell and #32 Campos earned spots on this year's first NCAA Coaches' rankings. The pair are tied for the lead in overall wins for AU this season at 14 apiece, and have contributed a combined 41 points to their team in dual meets so far.
  • Junior Raymond Lopez has been excellent in duals for the Eagles this season, posting a 6-1 record after suffering his only loss in a dual to Army's #20 Ethan Berginic last Sunday. He trails only Campos and Jarrell in overall wins (12), and recorded his 13th career fall at the F&M Open to move into 14th in program history.
  • The Eagles went 8-14 in dual meets last season, but 0-5 against EIWA opponents.
  • The Eagles have four captains in 2024-25: graduate senior Jarrell is serving in the role for the fourth year in a row, while redshirt senior Jack Nies is a team captain for the second year in a row. Joining them are first-year team captains Maximillian Leete, a senior, and Raymond Lopez, a junior.
