Track Began Outdoor Campaign at Fred Hardy Invitational

RICHMOND, Va. – Track set off their spring, outdoor slate of events on Friday afternoon at the Fred Hardy Invitational hosted by the University of Richmond. Three record book marks and 22 personal records (PRs) highlighted the event for the Eagles.
  • The outdoor season began for the Eagles with sophomore Danny O'Neill taking to the track for the men's 3000m steeplechase. O'Neill came in second overall, claiming the spot with his 9:51.28 finish, beating his previous best time in the event by almost twenty seconds.
  • Freshmen sprinter Chloee Dotts on the women's side picked up right where she finished her indoor season. Dotts finished ninth in the 400m event and now sits at eighth place in American's outdoor track record books, coming in at 1:00.90.
  • Classmate and fellow sprinter, Fernando Ibarra also had an impressive showing in Richmond, getting a record book altering time (22.66s) with his third-place finish in the men's 200m dash to be seventh in the books.
  • It was another record-breaking day for women's distance runner June Mwaniki. The junior didn't miss a step in the indoor to outdoor transition and set a personal best in the women's 5000m run when she finished in second place. With her new 11 second PR, she also added her name to the record books again, sitting herself at sixth overall on the list of top-10 performers with her 17:13.92 finish.
  • With Mwaniki in the women's 5000m, Skyler Tatum, Brooke Evans, and Skyler Tatum all set PRs to see that all four runners in the field for the Eagles earned their top time in the event.
  • Other top performers of the day were freshman Carver Morgan, in the men's 800m run, coming across the line first in his heat and finishing fifth overall and Kate Riley, who also finished first in her heat in the women's 15000m, crossing the line with a PR and an 18th place finish overall.
QUOTES FROM COACH GRAHAM
"The teams had a very solid outdoor opener. We had everyone racing aggressively with a number of PRs and podium finished. Danny O'Neill getting second with a big PR to kick off the day and Carver Morgan racing aggressively for a decisive heat win and a PR in the 800m on the guy's side.

"Kate Riley also had a decisive heat win and PR in the women's 15000m, and June Mwaniki ran a massive PR again in the 5000m for second place as well as sixth place all time.

"On the sprints side, Fernando Ibarra came away with a podium finish for third at the meet and seventh all time in the men's 200m, and Chloee Dotts opened nicely at just over 60s in the women's 400m for eighth all time.

"This is a good place to start from and we're looking to build on that momentum in coming weeks."
