Track Concludes Patriot League Championships

WASHINGTON - A new all-time top ten performance from the women's distance medley concluded the 2020 Patriot League Indoor Championships for the American University track team on Sunday.

#AUTF NOTES
  • The foursome of senior Arianna Lopez, sophomore Elise Hooker, and freshmen Nia Holden and Sarah Maple timed through in 12:15.48 for seventh in the field, but sixth in the AU record books. The squad entered the meet with the seventh-fastest time in program history from earlier in the season (12:32.16).
  • Two of the three women in the 3000-meter run also came away with new personal records (PR's), starting with sophomore Clare Hernandez who paced the Eagles with a 23rd-place finish in the 3k with a final time of 10:32.92.
  • Freshman Emily Neuner was close behind in 25th with a 10:36.28 finish, cutting 14 seconds off her previous best from the VMI Keydet Invitational in January.
  • On the men's side, freshman Russell Sullivan gave an exciting glimpse of what's to come in his career. He led his section for much of the 3k race before fading in the final 400m, but still came away with a seven-second PR, finishing in 8:37.49 for 13th overall.
  • The men's DMR saw another gutsy performance from a freshman, with Tucker Zullo steadily closing in on the lead pack during the final leg, moving from ninth to finish in fifth. The young squad of Zullo, freshman Jackson McCarthy, sophomore Christian Kahn, and freshman Malcolm Going timed through in 10:15.43.
HEAR FROM COACH GRAHAM...
"Both teams fought hard today. There was a stark difference in mindset and racing aggression. We kicked off with to PR's in the women's 3k from Emily Neuner and Clare Hernandez. Russell Sullivan came back with another solid run in the 3k being pulled out by a gutsy first half of the race with leading duties from Thomas Scartz.

"Our teams were able to learn a lot about themselves from last night to this morning, and capitalized in the DMR's. Both teams got the AU name on the board, and both teams had every leg fighting for position highlighted by the final 1600m legs of Tucker Zullo and Sarah Maple. We'll go back to work now to get ready for the outdoor season." - Sean Graham, head coach
