WASHINGTON - The American University track & field team had a strong open to the 2019-20 indoor season on Saturday, as the Eagles clocked through with record book times at Bucknell's Bison Opener in Lewisburg, Pa.
- AU picked up four all-time top-ten marks in the early season meet along with a pair of first-place finishes and five top-five placings.
- Freshman Nia Holden opened her track campaign with the fourth-fastest 500-meter time in AU history, crossing in 1:20.85 to place fourth in the field. Sophomore Alisha Netus also came away with a top-ten mark, hitting 27.56 for the 200-meter dash to come in sixth in the AU record book.
- The women's 4x400m relay squad also picked up one of the fastest times in recent history, as senior Arianna Lopez, sophomore Elise Hooker, and freshmen Nia Holden and Sarah Maple finished in 4:15.10 for No. 3 in the top-ten list.
- Junior Shelbi Wuss also led the women's team with a third-place finish in the 3000m field, finishing in 10:24.88.
- On the men's side, the foursome of senior Faolan Coogan Pluck, sophomore Christian Kahn, and freshmen Jackson McCarthy and Malcolm Going became the first 4x400m squad to land in the AU record books since 2009 with the 10th-fastest time in program history - 3:35.19.
- Individually, Kahn and freshman Tucker Zullo each picked up an event win to open the season. Kahn paced the 500m field in 1:10.20 to land just off his 1:08.52 PR, while Zullo timed through in 4:26.82 to lead the field in the mile.
- A tight pack followed Zullo in the mile, with classmates Nate Reeves, Jackson McCarthy, and Russell Sullivan all taking third through fifth while junior John Pagliaro and Thomas Scartz placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
- Freshman Malcolm Going also had a strong track debut, placing third in the 800m with a final time of 1:58.22.
NEXT UP...
The Eagles will refocus on training over the next several weeks during the holiday break before restarting the indoor season on January 11 with Lehigh's Angry Bird Challenge.
