HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - Two heartbreaking overtime results kept a pair of American University wrestlers from advancing to the semifinals in their respective weight classes at the 57th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships.
Sal Profaci (141 pounds) and
Tanner Harvey (184 pounds) both started strong before second-session losses in OT in the quarterfinals.
HIGHLIGHTS
- All four AU wrestlers still competing can finish as high as third place with three wins on Monday.
- Harvey won three matches to start his day including a fall in 1:55 in the round of 32 and an 18-6 major decision in the round of 16.
- Coming up against Iowa's Abe Assad in the quarterfinals, Harvey suffered an 8-6 overtime loss after leading in the final seconds of regulation. On Monday, Harvey will continue his Midlands journey in the consolation round of 8 along with three of his teammates.
- Profaci won by decision in his first two bouts at 141 pounds over opponents from Northwestern and Central Michigan.
- In the quarterfinals, Profaci came up against 10th-ranked Josh Heil of Campbell and lost in a 2-1 heartbreaker in overtime ride out. He'll next compete in the consolation round of 8.
- Kizhan Clarke (149 pounds), who started the day with two wins including an 18-2 technical fall over Penn's Gabe Miller in the round of 32, saw his undefeated season end in the round of 16 with a narrow, 2-1 loss to Jeren Glosser of Iowa.
- In the consolation round of 8, Clarke recovered with a 4-2 win over Oklahoma's Jacob Butler. He stands at 3-1 overall at Midlands, and will continue competing on Monday.
- Gage Curry (125 pounds) came from behind for a 7-5 win in the consolation round of 16 over Justin Cardani of Illinois.
- Curry will be back in action on Monday in the consolation round of 8.
- At 157 pounds, Ethan Karsten earned two wins by fall (2:01 and 50 seconds) before falling in the round of 16 to Justin Ruffin of SIUE. Karsten was later eliminated in the consolation bracket, finishing at 2-2 for the day.
- Both Niko Camacho (285 pounds) and Patrick Ryan (149 pounds) were defeated twice to end their road at Midlands.
