Campos and Leete Advance to Day Two of NCAA Wrestling Championships

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Caleb Campos and Maximilian Leete both went 1-1 on the first day of the NCAA Wrestling Championships, earning the right to wrestle on day two in the consolation round of 16. Emmanuel Ulrich won a match in the pigtail round, but back-to-back losses in the round of 32 and consolation bracket ended his season.

Session One
  • Ulrich started the day with a win in the pigtail match over Bloomsburg's #33 seed Mason Rebuck 8-6. He got on the board with an emphatic takedown in the first period, lifting Rebuck before slamming him to the mat for three points.
  • The heavyweight added another takedown in the third period that loomed large, giving him a five-point cushion with just over a minute remaining. Rebuck scored three points of his own with 22 seconds left, but Ulrich responded with an escape at the end of the scramble and held on for the win.
  • With the victory, Ulrich earned a matchup with the #1 seed Yonger Bastida from Iowa State. He was defeated via technical fall 22-5, moving him to the consolation bracket.
  • Leete came up just short against the #23 seed Braxton Brown of Maryland, falling 4-3. He gave up a takedown in the first period and couldn't equal it, scoring just two escapes.
  • Campos won a grueling match in sudden victory against Cal Poly's #23 seed Ceasar Garza 4-1, earning a spot in the round of 16.
  • Tied at one point apiece after each wrestler scored an escape in regulation, Campos got in on a shot and finished for the takedown after a long fight from Garza.
Session Two
  • Leete bounced back in the consolation round of 32, using high IQ wrestling to defeat Rutgers' Dylan Shawver 4-1.
  • Wrapped up with Shawver late in the first period, Leete got his right arm behind his head and drove him to the edge of the mat for a takedown with one second left. The high IQ score was the only takedown of the match, with Leete adding an escape in the third period.
  • Campos competed well against Iowa's #7 seed Angelo Ferrari in the round of 32, but lost the match 11-5. He cut a 5-0 lead down to 5-3 with an escape and a reversal, but a third period takedown from Ferrari extended his lead enough for the win.
  • Ulrich was defeated by Columbia's #17 seed Vincent Mueller via pin. The redshirt sophomore trailed just 1-0 after an escape in the second period, and Mueller put his back to the mat with just seven seconds left in the third for the fall.
