Lindovska, Crum Lead Volleyball to 3-2 Comeback Win vs. Xavier

A career day from Kristyna Lindovska and Juliana Crum's third consecutive double-double led the American University volleyball team to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Xavier to close out competition at the UC Irvine Invitational in Irvine, Calif.

Lindovska registered her second consecutive double-double, notching a career-best 24 kills and 12 digs, hitting .328 with six blocks in the match. Crum secured her third straight double-double with 12 kills and 20 digs. Kylann Scheidt led the Eagles with 31 assists and Megan Rosburg had a team-high 26 digs. Morgan Hendrix posted eight blocks in the match. 

Xavier (7-6) tallied five straight points to take an 8-4 advantage before American battled back to knot it up. The Eagles took a 12-10 lead on a kill by Monika Smidova, forcing Xavier to call a timeout. A 4-0 run by the Musketeers gave the team a 19-16 edge before American battled back within one, 24-23, on a kill by Lindovska. But a kill from Abbey Bessler secured the set one victory, 25-23, for Xavier.

The Musketeers took a 12-6 advantage in the second set and went up 15-8 on a kill by Sofia Peterson. The Eagles answered with a 4-0 run to make it a two-point match but Xavier responded with a 5-1 run of its own for the 22-16 lead. American registered back-to-back points on a block from Kelly McCaddin and Smidova and ace by McCaddin, but three straight kills gave the Musketeers a 2-0 match lead with a 25-18 win. 

The third set featured 11 ties before a 6-2 run put American (12-1) up 20-16. Xavier cut the lead to one, 20-19, on consecutive aces by Sarah Brown as the Eagles called a timeout. The Musketeers knotted it up at 21-all on an error by Hendrix. American responded with back-to-back points and closed out the set with consecutive tallies for the 25-22 victory.

The Eagles forced the decisive final set with a 25-19 win in set four. The two teams battled back and forth before American notched three straight points for the 13-11 lead. Xavier retook the lead on an ace by Brown but the Eagles answered with a 5-1 run for the 19-16 advantage. American closed out the set with another 5-1 run to tie up the match at two sets apiece. 

The final set featured nine ties and two lead changes as the two teams battled for the win. The Musketeers took an 11-9 lead on a kill from Brown but the Eagles tied it at 11-all on a kill by McCaddin. The teams traded scores before American strung together three consecutive tallies for the 16-14 win and 3-2 match victory.

Four players registered double-digit kills for Xavier, led by Brown with 18. She also was one of three players to post a double-double for the Musketeers with a team-high 17 digs. Bessler finished with 13 kills and 15 digs and Aubree Smith led the team with 53 assists and 14 digs. 

The Eagles were able to outhit Xavier, .234 to .199, for the match and held a 13.0 to 9.5 advantage in total blocks.

Following the conclusion of Saturday's matches, Crum and Lindovska were recognized on the All-Tournament Team.

American closes out its California road trip at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, September 22 at 4 p.m. EST.
