Volleyball Takes Care of Navy in Confident Win, 3-0

WASHINGTON - In an all-around quality showing, the American University volleyball team powered its way to a 3-0 sweep of Navy on Friday night. The Eagles hit .293 and made just three reception errors in one of their most complete performances of the season so far. 

Notable 
  • Prinzez Zeck, Sophie Dufour, and Elise Sterling all hit above .300 tonight, with Zeck posting a season-high .538 percentage and nine kills. Carly Sciborski also hit .286 with six kills. 
  • Salme Adeele Hollas recorded her third double-double of the season, going for 10 kills and 11 digs. 
  • Zedo Yilmaz made the start at libero for the first time in her collegiate career, logging 18 digs, four assists, and committing just two reception errors. 
  • Deniz Dakak dished out 34 assists and took on 11 digs, putting up her first double-double of the year. 
  • The Eagles delivered nine service aces, led by three from Sophie Dufour. The freshman now has 16 on the season. 
  • Tonight's result marks AU's sixth sweep of the season. 
  • American is now 2-1 in Patriot League play and 9-4 overall.
How it Happened
  • The two teams went punch-for-punch in the first set, with neither side leading by more than two points until AU went on a 7-3 run to make the score 24-18. 
  • Two kills from Zeck and a service ace from Dufour highlighted the run, and Hollas put down the final kill to seal the set 25-18. 
  • Zeck and Hollas led AU's attacking effort in the frame with four kills apiece. 
  • The Mids battled with American for much of the second set as well, trading points up until the score was knotted at 17-17. 
  • AU busted the frame open with another late-set spurt, using an 8-4 run to charge to a 25-20 win. Six of the eight points were AU kills, two from Dufour and one apiece from Sciborski, Zeck, Hollas, and Sterling. 
  • It was the home side's most efficient set of the evening, hitting .400 and combining for four total blocks between Zeck, Sciborski, Dufour, and Dakak. 
  • The Eagles made their stranglehold on the match even tighter at the start of the third set, lying out to a 16-5 lead and forcing Navy to take two timeouts. 
  • Navy made eight attack errors, and AU cruised to a 25-15 win to take the set and the match.

  • The Eagles are on the road for the next three matches, beginning with a trip to Loyola Maryland on Sunday. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
