Volleyball Continues Torrid Pace, 3-0 Over Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Led by a season-high 18 kills from Salme Adeele Hollas, the American University volleyball team defeated Lehigh in straight sets on Saturday afternoon on the road. Another dominant day for the Eagles, they have now won five matches in a row and have not lost a set since September 20. 

Notable
  • Hollas' attacking effort came with a blistering .469 hitting percentage, and she added seven digs. Sophie Dufour was efficient as well on a 12-kill day for her, hitting .385 and contributed nine digs. 
  • Bella Marrero had a productive afternoon, taking on 14 digs, distributing four assists, and putting down two service aces. 
  • Deniz Dakak dished out 31 assists and logged sox digs. The sophomore setter continues her impressive season, recording over 30 assists in every match this season and leading the Patriot League in the category. 
  • Prinzez Zeck led the way up front with three total blocks on the day. 
  • Today's result was AU's ninth sweep of the season and fourth in a row. 
How it Happened
  • The two teams traded blows in the early stages of the first set, reaching eight ties on the scoreboard until AU took off for a 12-6 run to close the set. 
  • Hollas went for seven kills and Dufour had six, as the two were in a groove in the first frame. AU also had three blocks, one from Dufour, two from Zeck, one of which coming with an assist from Hollas. 
  • The Eagles stole the second set in dramatic fashion, using a late run to shock the Mountain Hawks. 
  • American trailed 19-16, then won the next three points to take a one-point lead. Three of the four points came win Alex Ioannou serving, and an ace from her put the Eagles in front. 
  • Three points later after a response from Lehigh, the score was tied 21-21. AU stormed forward from there, creating two attacking errors and getting a kill each from Dufour and Hollas to take the set 25-21.
  • A devastating blow to the home side, the Eagles had momentum on their side heading into the third set. They won the frame comfortably 25-20, leading for the majority of it. Hollas had another seven kills to button up her excellent afternoon.

  • The Eagles return home next weekend to host Lafayette on Friday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m., then turn around to host Holy Cross on Sunday at 3 p.m.
