Volleyball Has its Way With Bucknell for Third Sweep in a Row

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The American University volleyball team controlled the ball with ease on Friday night, committing zero reception errors on the way to an impressive 3-0 routing of the Bison on the road. The Eagles have won four matches in a row and can add an exclamation point to tonight's victory, as it puts them in sole possession of second place in the Patriot League.

Notable
  • The last time American committed 0 reception errors in a match was last year, Sept. 20 against Loyola.
  • Tonight was the first time this season that Bucknell was held below 20 points in every set of a match.
  • The impeccable night in ball control was led by Bella Marrero, who had 18 digs. Deniz Dakak also contributed to that category, pairing 35 assists with 13 digs.
  • Salme Adeele Hollas led AU on the attacking side with 12 kills, and she was a dig away from a double-double. Sophie Dufour followed with 10 kills and eight digs.
  • The Eagles logged 14 block assists to just six for the Bison, led by five for Prinzez Zeck. The junior continues to climb the conference ladder in blocks, now in seventh in the PL with 53.
  • AU put down six service aces tonight. Marrero had two, and Dakak, Hollas, Dufour, and Elise Sterling each added one.
  • The victory marks American's eighth sweep of the season.
  • The Eagles are now 11-4 overall, and 4-1 in PL play.
How it Happened
  • The only time American trailed in the first set was at 4-3, but Bucknell stayed within striking distance through the middle of the frame.
  • After a kill from Sydney Shaffer cut AU's lead to just two at 15-13, the Eagles charged a 7-2 run to make it 22-14. Five of the seven points came on kills, two from Hollas and one from Zeck, Sterling, and Dakak.
  • It was easy pickings from there for the visitors, closing out the frame 25-17.
  • After the Eagles got out to a 15-8 lead in the second set, Bucknell squeezed out a 4-2 run to make the deficit manageable at 16-12. AU responded with another late-set run, taking nine of the next 14 points. Both Hollas and Dufour had four kills in the set to lead the way.
  • The Eagles were all over the floor in the second set, as the home side hit -.028.
  • All three sets we're dominated by AU, but none more than the third. The score was tied early 4-4 until American busted it open with a scorching 15-4 run. The Eagles had seven kills, three blocks, and two service aces on the spurt.
  • Relentlessly closing out the set, AU held the Bison to just 12 points.
