Volleyball Falls to William & Mary, 3-1

Box Score

The American University volleyball team lost to William & Mary Tuesday night, 3-1, in Bender Arena. Magdalena Tekiel scored 16 kills while Angelina Waterman added 12 but it was not enough as the Tribe took the victory by set scores to 25-16, 25-19, 17-25 and 25-20.

American (9-10, 3-2) struggled to find a rhythm early and trailed 10-4 in the first frame following a 7-1 William & Mary (12-7, 4-1) run. The Tribe continued its solid play throughout the set, never letting the Eagles get closer than three points on the scoreboard, en route to taking the set, 25-16. The second set was much of the same as William & Mary built up an eight point advantage, 19-11, before earning set point, 25-19.

The Eagles rebounded in the third set and scored 12 of the final 16 points to earn the victory, 25-17. American put together three separate runs of three points or more in the frame, including a 7-0 stretch which included two Claire Recht service aces and two Tekiel kills. William & Mary, however, regained control of the match in the fourth set and took match points, 25-20.

Tekiel scored a match-high 16 kills and added seven digs. Waterman recorded 12 kills of her own with five digs and three block assists. Cynammon Burns tallied 18 digs while Cassandra Ricketts chipped in 11 with six kills.

American will return to Patriot League play this weekend with matches at Army and Holy Cross.
