BETHLEHEM, Pa. –– Two Eagles, Jill DuVarney and Sophie Willemse, have been named the Patriot League's Forward and Defensive player of the week after American University field hockey went 2-0 this weekend on their efforts.
 
DuVarney's goal in the Eagles' conference matchup with Bucknell on Friday was the difference-maker. With 34 seconds left in regulation, DuVarney capitalized on a ball sent into the circle by Willemse and clinched the conference victory for AU.
 
On Sunday against Lock Haven, the sophomore took three shots–all of which were on target–and forced the keeper into making three saves, while keeping up pressure in the circle and setting up plays for teammates throughout the contest.
 
Willemse was integral on both ends of the field for American. As a defender, the senior helped the Eagles to a perfect weekend where they conceded no goals and only gave up one shot on goal, playing the entirety of both contests and was the key to the team's ball distribution as they built from the back.
 
It was Willemse's ball into the circle that gave the Eagles the scoring opportunity and subsequent goal from DuVarney against Bucknell in the final 34 seconds and against Lock Haven, Willemse would tally an assist as well on AU's second goal.
 
As a part of the Eagles defense and defensive penalty corner unit, Willemse helped AU to make sure neither Bucknell, nor Lock Haven was able to convert across the weekend. The Bison didn't register a single shot on goal even with four corners and six shots, and Lock Haven only managed just one shot on frame the and the Eagles only gave up one penalty corner.
