BETHLEHEM, Pa. –– American University field hockey senior Sophie Willemse has been named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week after the Eagles' 2-0 weekend of gameplay.
 
Willemse was integral on both ends of the field for American, a stalwart defender across the weekend and a key component of the team's attacking penalty corner unit, scoring three goals: two against William & Mary and one against Towson. She also tallied an assist against Towson.
 
As the anchor for AU's defense this weekend, Willemse played the entirety of both contests and was key to the team's ball distribution, setting up Eagles' offensive runs as they built from the back.
 
With the defensive penalty corner unit, and the head of the on-field back three players, Willemse helped AU along the way to relinquishing just one goal on the weekend, enabling the team to outscore their opponents a combined 14-1.
 
The Eagles continue out on the road, first up taking on Bucknell on Friday, Sept. 18 for their first conference game of the season.
