American University

WASHINGTON  –– Six different players scored in American University field hockey's dominant 8-0 win at home against William & Mary on Friday evening at the Jacobs Complex.

Notable

• Sophie Willemse and Olivia Morraye each recorded two goals while Jill DuVarney, Kaleigh Missimer, Maura Read, and Caroline Kantz each got a goal.
• For first-year Kantz, the game saw both her first collegiate start and goal.
• Emilia Winkler recorded four assists, Ashley Huddleston three, and Sienna Klein, Kantz, and Sam Kockx each had one.
• The Eagles outshot the Tribe 22-2 overall and 15-1 in shots on goal; American also had the 9-2 advantage in penalty corners and converted on five of those chances.

How It Happened
The Eagles got on the board early, with a penalty corner goal from Morraye, assisted by Winkler and Huddleston, in the eighth minute. Winkler was the stopper and Huddleston the inserter for the corner, a combination that would prove successful throughout.
 
DuVarney closed out the first period with her goal in the 14th minute; she sent it into the circle herself and then ended up putting the final touch on it in front of the cage, 2-0.
 
Another corner with a textbook goal, this time from Willemse four minutes into the second period, saw assists go to both Winkler and Huddleston again.
 
Missimer got her second goal of the season, first of the game in the 22nd minute. The grad student found herself in the right place in a scramble and managed to sneak it past the Tribe's keeper on the right side and into the left corner off an assist from Sienna Klein.
 
American led 4-0 at the half and W&M hadn't yet registered a shot.
 
Just over a minute into the third quarter, Willemse and Winkler connected again on a penalty corner, this time adding Kantz into the mix as the inserter, and Willemse sent a rocket into the cage for her second goal that would have AU up 5-0.
 
For her second of the game–the sixth for American–Morraye tallied another penalty corner goal, again with Winkler and Huddleston earning assists.
 
Read, who last scored in the Eagles 2025 season opener against the Tribe, earned a goal in the 39th minute. Read was running straight to the cage and Kockx's perfectly-timed pass across the goal connected to put American up 7-0 to cap the third period.
 
The Tribe would register both shots in the third period, one on goal, forcing Teagan Harmon into action to keep the shutout.
 
A single goal scored in the fourth period would round out the contest. Kantz sent the corner in and ended up scoring on the near side after it was battled around in front of the cage for a bit.

The Eagles are out on the road for the next few games, first heading into Maryland to take on Towson on Sunday, Sept. 13 at noon.
