WASHINGTON –– The Dutch duo of first-year
Sam Kockx and senior
Sophie Willemse combined to give American University field hockey its first win of the season on Sunday, topping App State, 2-1.
Notable
- Kockx's first collegiate goal was a deflection off a scorching drag pass from the top of the offensive third that was sent in by Willemse.
- Willemse's game winning goal late in the fourth quarter was her first of the season. The senior played a complete game.
How It Happened
Nothing was going for either team in the first quarter of the, although, App did register a shot on target that was saved by defender
Olivia Morraye.
In the second, Kockx managed a shot on goal that was saved but reclaimed by AU's offense and passed back to Willemse who swept the ball into the circle, back to a waiting Kockx who deflected the shot up and over the defense and the App goalkeeper to put American up, 1-0.
The Mountaineers came out from halftime firing, searching for a break. They would get one less than three minutes into the third frame, Kassie Paul and Chloe Hook pairing up to best the Eagles' defense and tie the game 1-all.
On American's seventh penalty corner of the contest, with 3:40 remaining on the clock, Willemse would earn a goal of her own off assists from Morraye and
Emilia Winkler. It would prove to be the game-winning goal as AU closed out the game by fighting off App's last-grasp attempts.
