CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Led by a second place finish from redshirt junior Caleb Campos at 184 pounds, the American University wrestling team saw five Eagles place in the top eight at the Southern Scuffle on Sunday for the program's best-ever showing at the tournament. Along with Campos, Maximilian Leete took fourth place, and JJ Peace, Raymond Lopez, and Emmanuel Ulrich all won seventh place in their respective weight classes.
Notable
- The Eagles defeated eight ranked wrestlers on the weekend and finished 10th out of 28 in team scoring.
- Campos knocked off the tournament's 184-pound number one seed and 16th-ranked Aidan Brenot in the semifinals, besting NDSU's wrestler 8-2. With a 4-2 lead in the third period, Campos delivered a perfect shot to complete a takedown and seal the win.
- In the finals, Campos lost a thrilling shootout to Penn State's Asher Cunningham 12-9. There were several scrambles in the match, giving both wrestlers a takedown and reversal each heading into the third period.
- After a reversal and two nearfall points for Cunningham, Campos fought until the final second. He almost found nearfall points of his own in a scramble with five seconds remaining, but Cunningham was able to squeeze out of of his grasp as the buzzer sounded. Campos finished the weekend 4-1.
- Leete narrowly missed a trip to the finals, falling to Northern Colorado's #9 Dominick Serrano in overtime 8-5. He tied the match at 5-5 with an escape in the third period, but Serrano came up with a takedown just under 90 seconds into overtime.
- After winning by medical forfeit against #10 Dillon Campbell of Virginia Tech, Leete advanced to the third place match. He faced off against Penn's #16 Evan Mougalian and lost 10-3, taking fourth place.
- Peace started the day by taking down #31 Bridger Ricks of Utah Valley, controlling the match from start to the finish. He secured a takedown in the first and third periods, adding an escape to lock up the impressive victory.
- The 125-pounder fell to Navy's #33 Andrew Binnni in the cons of 4 via major decision, leaving him with a shot at seventh place later in the afternoon. Peace was up to task, defeating Chattanooga's Ty Tice 7-3 to finish a step up on the podium.
- After defeating Arkansas Little Rock's Kaden Darwin in the cons of 8, Ulrich lost a tight battle to Army's Lucas Stoddard in the cons of 4. The two heavies were knotted 1-1 at the end of regulation, but riding time advantage gave Stoddard the win.
- In the 7th place match against Cornell's Cyril Kruse, Ulrich came out on top of a contest that required two tiebreaker periods after overtime couldn't separate the two heavies. He won it 3-2, finishing out his weekend with a 4-2 record.
