Men's and Women's Swim & Dive Sweep Howard for the First Time in Eight Years

WASHINGTON - For the first time in eight years, the American University men's and women's swimming & diving teams both beat Howard in a dual meet, thanks to 18 wins overall in 26 events. The women's 200 freestyle relay team of grad student Mimi Watts, sophomore Lian Jeong Engle, freshman Grace Gilbert and freshman Marin Priddy set a pool record in the last event of the night.

Notable Results
  • The women captured wins in both relays, starting off the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay. Teaming up for that win were Watts, Jeong Engle, Priddy and freshman Piper Crosby with a time of 1:45.84, just a half second off the pool record in that event.
  • In the 200 free relay to end the night, the Eagles' foursome of Watts, Jeong Engle, Gilbert, and Priddy went 1:35.47 to break a record set by Towson University (1:35.87) that had stood since 2013.
  • Setting the tone early on the men's side were the foursome of senior Aidan Delehanty, junior Colin Clough, junior Daniel Coughlin and freshman Charlie St. Louis who won the men's 200 medley relay, edging out Howard by just over a tenth of a second with a time of 1:34.60.
  • Freshmen Mallorie Jeremiah and Zachary Rothman earned wins in the women's and men's 1000 freestyle, respectively.
  • Jeremiah's time of 10:39.37 cracked the top 16 all-time PRs for the women. Later in the meet, Jeremiah took home a second win with her time of 2:25.68 in the 200 breaststroke.
  • Junior Isabel McGovern won two individual events, taking the 200 free in 1:53.76, and winning a very close race in the 200 fly with her time of 2:08.00.
  • Watts earned an individual win in the 50 free in 23.74, putting her win count at three for the night. Jeong Engle also finished at three wins overall, taking an individual win in the 100 free in 52.76.
  • Another two individual wins came from freshman Demetra Bicos, who placed first in both the women's 400 IM (4:36.44) and the 500 free (5:08.83).
  • Junior diver Peyton Thurman took first place on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards for the women. Junior Maggie Fanning was right behind her on both, and Fanning's score of 208.72 on the 3-meter was a new PR that improved her own 12th-place standing at AU.
  • Freshman Luke Martens won the men's 400 IM in 4:10.41.
  • Clough, already a winner in the early relay, made it two wins as he added an individual victory in the 100 free in 46.64. Coughlin did the same in the 200 fly, going 1:54.48 to win that event for a second straight home meet.
  • Sophomore Brent Hinckley won the 500 free in 4:48.24, followed closely by Rothman who took second in 4:48.66.
  • Freshman diver Gray Miller posted a PR of 290.47 to win the 3-meter, placing fifth all-time on AU's top 16 list and ranking as the best score for any diver of coach John Barry's at American.
  • Miller placed second on the 1-meter with a score of 258.67, also a new PR that moves him up to sixth all-time on that list.
Team Scores
  • The women's team won by a final of 155-83, with wins in 12 of 13 events.
  • The men's team won 125.5-117.5, with wins in seven of 13 events.
Next Up
  • The Eagles will be back in the pool at Bucknell next Saturday, Nov. 9, facing the host Bison along with Navy and Lafayette in a quad meet at noon.
