TULSA, Okla. - The Eagles will be represented at the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships, as American University sophomore
Jack Maida will compete for AU in the 133-pound weight class this week. The event is slated for Thursday-Saturday, March 16-18 at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla.
NCAA Championships
- Maida, who is 21-13 this season, is American's first NCAA qualifier since 2021 and the first for second-year head coach Jason Borrelli in his tenure at AU.
- The Eagles have had 91 NCAA qualifiers dating back to 1973, and one national champion in Josh Glenn at 197 pounds in 2007.
- Eleven Eagles have earned a total of 19 All-America honors.
- Maida was initially assigned the No. 32 seed but was bumped up to No. 31 after a withdrawal. He will face No. 2 seed Daton Fix of Oklahoma State, a three-time NCAA finalist and All-American.
- The action begins at 11 a.m. on Thursday with the first session, and continues at 6 p.m. that evening.
- Morning rounds each day will be televised by ESPNU, with evening rounds on ESPN.
Borrelli at the NCAA Championships
- Second-year head coach Jason Borrelli is just two years removed from coaching a national champion in his final year at Stanford in 2021.
- Shane Griffith, at 165 pounds, was one of two All-Americans for the Cardinal that season, and was Stanford's first national champion since 2004.
- Over Borrelli's 13Â seasons, the Cardinal sent 35Â different wrestlers to the NCAA Championships a total of 64Â times. In 2016-17, Stanford set a program record with nine NCAA qualifiers.
The Maida Files
- Maida earned the fifth and final allocated spot for the EIWA at 133 pounds. He placed fourth as a freshman in 2022, but only two spots were allocated at 133 last season.
- He qualified for his first NCAA Championships with a fifth-place finish at the 2023 EIWA Championships, going 4-2 overall including a win over #25 Kurt Phipps of Bucknell.
- Both of Maida's losses at the EIWA Championships were to #31 Brendan Ferretti of Navy.
- Maida placed eighth at the F&M Open on Jan. 6, going 4-1 overall after a 3-0 start. He took first place at The Citadel Open in November by going 4-0 including a pin and a major decision.
- For the second year in a row, Maida earned a win over Maryland when the Eagles faced the Terps in a dual on the first competition day of the season.
