Sullivan Earns All-League Honors as Cross Country Competes at Patriot League Cross Country Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The American University cross country team faced off against the rest of the Patriot League pack on Saturday morning. Senior Row Sullivan paced the men's squad and finished eighth overall, earning themselves a spot on the Men's Second Team All-League. Overall, the men's team finished fifth in the team standings while the women finished sixth.

WOMEN
  • For the eighth time in her career, junior June Mwaniki paced the women's side, finishing first for the Eagles, and 27th overall with a time of 22:08.1.
  • Fellow classmate Callia Cordasco finished second overall for AU; her time of 23:00.8 was a PR.
  • Rachael Potter, a senior, finished third for the Eagles while junior Nia Holden finished fourth, crossing the line in 23:07.9.
  • First year Annie Ripol rounded out the top five for the women, finishing in 23:19.0.
MEN

  • The Eagles second place finisher was junior Sean Stuck, who came in at 28th overall at 25:40.1.

QUOTES FROM COACH GRAHAM
"The women executed their race plan perfectly today," said Graham. "June Mwaniki ran a near flawless race as our low scorer in 27th. Made even more impressive knowing she was 78th last year. The pack of women that supported her did phenomenally. Our 2-5 of Callia [Cordasco], Rachael [Potter], Nia [Holden], and Annie [Ripol] finished within 19 seconds of each other and five scoring points which is great, all in the 40's of scoring position.

"The teamwork was phenomenal across the board; they all pushed each other throughout the race really well. This is what lifted us above the other two schools behind us in the team scores by the slightest of margins.

"On the men's side we had a very solid day. Row Sullivan once again back in the upper echelon of the Patriot League in 8th is a great performance. The pack behind them ran an aggressive and gutsy race exactly like we wanted them to.

"Sean Stuck with a top 30 performance after a challenging few weeks prior, Oscar [Counsell] moving very well up to 31 in only his 3rd race of the year, and finally great racing by Michael [Dua] as our four man in 36 in his first full race of the season.

"We had the choice of running for fourth place as a team or taking a stab at third should one of the top three falter slightly. The men attacked the race well but slipped slightly back to fifth by just a few points when all was said and done. All-in-all, a very strong day with a slight chip for what's to come.

"To have the progress of the women improving from 10th to 6th and the men 8th to 5th in just one year at the Patriot League Championships is a great step forward for the program."
