INDIANAPOLIS – Four American University wrestlers will compete at next week's NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, with the addition of redshirt senior
Sal Profaci as an at-large announced by the NCAA on Tuesday. Profaci joins automatic qualifiers
Kizhan Clarke,
Gage Curry and
Tanner Harvey.
The 2020 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will be held in Minneapolis from March 19 to 21. Curry will be making his third straight appearance, while Harvey will go for the second consecutive year. Profaci competed in the 2017 National Championships with the University of Michigan, and Clarke, ranked as high as seventh in the nation at 149 pounds this season, is making his first appearance.
The 48 wrestlers given at-large bids join the 282 student-athletes that qualified automatically through their conference tournament finishes last weekend. The at-large selections were made by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee using the following selection criteria: head-to-head competition, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, rating percentage index, coaches ranking and conference tournament finish.
"Sal has earned this at-large bid through his hard work and effort during the season," said AU head coach
Teague Moore. "He is most deserving of this opportunity."
Brackets and seeds will be announced on Wednesday at 6 p.m. on NCAA.com on the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship selection show.
- Curry, a redshirt junior, is 30-9 this season and has qualified for NCAAs every year he's been eligible (was a redshirt in 2016-17). He's the 20th-ranked wrestler in the nation at 125 pounds, and placed fourth at the EIWA Championships to earn an automatic spot at this year's NCAAs.
- Clarke, a redshirt junior, has a record of 36-7 for the season and also placed fourth at the EIWA Championships to earn his first NCAA berth. He is currently ranked 12th in the nation and was as high as seventh this season.
- Harvey, ranked 20th in the nation, was AU's top finisher at the EIWA Championships with a third-place finish at 184 pounds. His record for the season is 24-8 and he has not lost a match by more than three points all year.
- Profaci is 26-9 overall this season and is 23rd at 141 pounds as of the latest NCAA Coaches Panel rankings. He's 11-0 in major decisions to lead AU and rank in a tie for third all-time in program history for a single season.
