Track Restarts Indoor Campaign with PR's at Angry Birds Challenge

WASHINGTON - The American track & field restarted its indoor campaign after the holiday break on Saturday, earning nine personal records (PR's) and two all-time top ten marks at Lehigh's Angry Birds Challenge.

#AUTF NOTES
  • This is the second meet of the season for the Eagles, who opened their 2019-20 campaign at Bucknell's Bison Opener on December 7.
  • Among the highlights for the day were six section wins, starting with AU's first event of the day with the women's mile. Freshman Sarah Maple paced the Eagles with a 5:24.65 finish, taking first in the second section of the event and placing eighth overall.
  • Classmates Amanda Muniz (5:35.75) and Ana Keene (5:51.32) both earned new PR's in the events.
  • A pair of men also hit new career-bests in the mile, starting with freshman Nate Reeves who led his section and placed fifth overall in 4:31.40. Junior Max Lustig finished close behind in seventh overall with a PR time of 4:34.53.
  • Reeves also led his section in the 800m run and placed fourth overall.
  • The women's 400m dash also saw a pair of highlights with freshman Nia Holden and senior Arianna Lopez each clocking through with all-time top ten marks. Holden won her heat with a final time of 1:01.35 - the fourth-fastest 400m performance in program history. Arianna Lopez's 1:02.32 finish was good for ninth in the program's top-ten list.
  • Sophomore Alisha Netus, who landed in the program's top-ten for the 200m dash at the Bison Opener, timed through with a new PR of 8.08 in the 60m dash and placed first in her section in the 200m dash.
  • The women's 3,000m closed out the day with junior Shelbi Wuss placing second (10:30.35) after leading the field for much of the race. Freshman Emily Neuner and sophomore Clare Hernandez also had good showings, crossing in first and second in their section, respectively.
HEAR FROM HEAD COACH SEAN GRAHAM
"All in all, it was a pretty good day. Even though it is our first meet, we still got out to a slower start than expected but gained momentum as the meet went on. On the women's side, there was a big section win by Sarah Maple in the mile, followed quickly by good performances from Nia [Holden] and Arianna [Lopez] in the 400m dash, at or just under their PR's. Alisha Netus continues to impress in the 60m with another PR. And finall, in the 3000m Shelbi Wuss placing second after pacing the field for 90 percent of the race, as well as Emily [Neuner] and Clare [Hernandez] going 1-2 in their section.

"On the men's side, Nate Reeves had two strong performances - first in the mile, winning his heat, and the other with an aggressive showing in the 800m. Tucker Zullo also impressed in his legs of both the DMR and 4x400m relays. We're looking forward to the team improving on this start during our next outing at VMI next week."
