ANNAPOLIS, Md. - With a 5-0 performance at 149 pounds,
Kizhan Clarke, ranked 13th in the nation, earned his third overall victory in as many meets this season and led American University wrestling at the Navy Classic on Saturday.
MEET HIGHLIGHTS
- Clarke beat Alec Hagan of Ohio 4-0 in the finals, and got there with an 8-3 win over Oregon State's Lane Stigall. Overall, Clarke went 5-0 for the day to improve to 13-0 this season.
- Other podium finishes for AU came from 18th-ranked Gage Curry, who took second at 125 pounds, and 13th-ranked Tanner Harvey, who placed second at 184 pounds.
- Curry lost in sudden victory in the finals, 3-1, to finish as runner-up. He had advanced to the finals by avenging a loss earlier this season and beating 13th-ranked Killian Cardinale of Old Dominion, 12-6.
- Overall, Curry went 4-1 including a fall in 1:01 against Jordan White of The Citadel in the first round and a 9-0 major decision vs. Graham Shore of Air Force later in the day.
- In the 184-pound finals, Harvey was edged 6-5 by Intermat's 10th-ranked wrestler, Hunter Bolen of fourth-ranked Virginia Tech.
- Harvey earned a hard-fought win in the semifinals, 8-5 over 17th-ranked Cameron Caffrey from Michigan State. He got to semis with an 18-5 major decision over Antonio Agee of ODU and had an earlier win by fall in 1:59.
- Overall, AU placed ninth of the 18 teams at an extremely competitive meet that was won by Virginia Tech.
- Fighting back after an early loss was Anthony Wokasch (165 pounds) who advanced in the consolation rounds and finished 3-2 overall.
- Ethan Karsten (157 pounds) had an impressive start to the day with a 17-second fall in the first round, and went on to finish 2-2 with both losses coming against top 25 opponents.
