Eagles Roll to 79-33 Victory Over Boston University

Box Score

WASHINGTON – Recording its largest victory in more than three decades, the American University women's basketball team rolled to a 79-33 win over Boston University on Wednesday evening at Bender Arena.

The Eagles posted their highest scoring output of the season, while the Terriers' 33 points were the fewest by an AU opponent this year. American's 46-point margin of victory is the fifth-largest in program history and the largest since January 1983, when AU defeated Baltimore, 97-43.

Leading the way for American was senior Ari Booth, who recorded a career-high 22 points in just 20 minutes of action. Sophomore Emily Kinneston, who missed the Eagles' previous four games due to injury, added 13 points and a career-high eight rebounds and six steals, while freshman Cecily Carl pitched in 10 points.

Naiyah Thompson led the Terriers with nine points, while Courtney Latham added eight points.

American (6-17, 4-8) got out to a hot start, opening the game on a 14-0 run before BU hit its first basket of the game, a three-pointer by Sarah Hope. The Eagles, led by 13 first-period points by Booth, remained in control, taking a 22-8 advantage into the second quarter.

The Eagles extended their lead in the second period and went into the locker room with a 39-12 advantage before opening the third period on a 10-0 run to grab a 37-point lead. However, the Terriers (2-21, 2-10) outscored the Eagles 11-5 over the remainder of the period, recording seven points at the foul line to cut the margin to 54-23 heading into the final stanza.

Most of American's starters sat out the fourth quarter, giving the Eagles' bench players plenty of quality minutes. The reserves made the most of their time on the court in the final period, shooting nearly 58 percent from the field and holding BU to just 10 points to clinch the big win.

For the game, American shot over 52 percent from the field, including 47 percent from beyond the arc, while holding BU to just 24.4 percent shooting. The Eagles also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Terriers, 44-24.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday, Feb. 13, when they visit preseason PL favorite Army West Point in a 3 p.m. contest.
