Box Score The No. 20 American University field hockey team rebounded from its loss yesterday to pick up a 4-1 win over Columbia on Sunday afternoon at the Terrapin Invitational in College Park, Md.
American (4-2) went on the attack right from the start. Carly Atchison notched the first shot of the day in the fourth minute off a penalty corner with Kimberly Pianucci coming up with the save. The Eagles registered two more attempts before Rebecca Treharne found the back of the net on a penalty corner in the ninth minute with Shelly Montgomery tallying the assist.
American took a 2-0 lead two and a half minutes later. Jaclyn Anspach fed the pass into the circle where Treharne notched her second of the day with a hard shot into the top of the cage.
Columbia (2-2) took a timeout after the score and went on the offensive. Ashley Dalisera came up with the stop on Zoe Blake's attempt and Grace Wilson registered a defensive save on another Blake shot. The Lions were able to convert on its third penalty corner of the game in the 19th minute, with Blake finally beating Dalisera to cut American's lead to 2-1.
Columbia opened the second half with four straight opportunities before Atchison gave the Eagles' offense its first shot of the half in the 43rd minute. Katie Lonsky posted her first career goal at American less than 30 seconds later. Isabel Terwindt broke away from the Lions' defense and took advantage of a 2-on-1 opportunity to feed it to Lonsky who put it away for the 3-1 lead.
The Eagles continued to pressure Columbia, registering shot after shot before being awarded a penalty corner in the final minute. Wilson rattled it into the cage to secure the 4-1 victory for American as Atchison and Victoria De Kepper were credited with the assists.
The Eagles outshot the Lions, 24-8, for the game and held a 6-5 edge in penalty corners. Dalisera recorded five saves as the starting goalkeeper.
American returns to Jacobs Field for a pair of games next weekend as it looks to remain undefeated at home. The Eagles open Patriot League play against Holy Cross on Saturday, September 21 at 12 p.m. and face No. 18 Wake Forest on Sunday, September 22 at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
