Lightning Delay Ends Field Hockey’s Hopes for a Comeback Against Richmond

WASHINGTON  –– Despite winning a challenge and being awarded a penalty stroke with 11 minutes remaining, a weather delay in the fourth period between American University field hockey and Richmond ended the contest early at Jacobs Complex. The  Spiders claimed 2-0 victory on Friday.

Notable
  • American led Richmond 9-6 in shots overall and 6-4 in shots on goal. AU also led 4-3 in penalty attempts.
  • Sophie Willemse led American with three shot attempts, two of which were on goal. Jordan Reicher also tallied two shots on goal.
How It Happened
American started on the front foot but was unable to break the Spiders' defensive line. Neither team broke the stalemate in the first half; American had five shots on goal to Richmond's zero.

On the third penalty corner in the third period, Willemse had a shot that was blocked for AU. On the other end, Richmond scored off a drag pass on the corner from Elen Nicholls to Clara Larripa to claim a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute.

Early in the fourth the Spiders doubled their lead, shorthanded, on another penalty corner, it was Nichols this time on an assist from Valen Luna Paratore.

Trailing with a little over 11 minutes and pressing to mount a comeback, the Eagles were turning the tides and were awarded a penalty stroke upon video review.

Before the stroke could be taken, lightning in the area initiated a weather delay that would ultimately end the contest early, Richmond claiming the early win, 2-0.
