Box Score The American University field hockey team registered three second half goals as it picked up its fifth shutout of the year in a 4-0 victory over Towson on Friday afternoon at Jacobs Field.
After a back and forth start American (9-4) went on the attack and tallied a pair of attempts in the 11th minute, but both were off target. Victoria De Kepper had an opportunity in the 14th minute as Brittany Varacallo made the save for the Tigers. Towson recorded its first shot in the 16th minute off a penalty corner and Stephanie Burry made the stop for the Eagles.
American continued to pressure the Tigers' defense and was awarded a penalty stroke in the 31st minute. Alex McMackin stepped up to take the shot and put it away to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead. Towson nearly added the equalizer in the 34th minute, but Kelsey Jones' shot off a penalty corner went wide.
American kept up its offensive pressure in the second half and was awarded four consecutive penalty corners. The Towson (1-13) defense held tight and prevented the Eagles from getting on the board again. American was finally able to break through in the 57th minute. The Eagles recorded three straight shots and Natalie Konerth was able to take advantage of a scramble by the Tigers' defense on the final one to put American up 2-0.
The Eagles took a 3-0 lead two minutes later on a penalty corner. Grace Wilson found the back of the net and Shelly Montgomery added the assist. American continued to go on the attack and found its fourth goal of the game in the 69th minute as Kati Rothenhoefer slipped it past Varacallo.
The Eagles held a 30-2 advantage in shots for the game, outshooting the Tigers, 22-0, in the second half. American also earned 13 penalty corners, with nine in the second half, while Towson had two for the game. Burry made one save as the starting goalkeeper.
The Eagles are back at Jacobs Field on Sunday, October 20 at 1 p.m. when it takes on No. 2 Connecticut for its annual Phil Jacobs game. The game will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
