Morgan Repeats as 800 Champion, Men’s DMR Takes the Title at Patriot League Championships

BOSTON – The American University indoor track team saw titles, podiums, and more top-10 times on day two of the Patriot League Championships (Mar. 1) at Boston University. Senior Carver Morgan earned his third consecutive conference 800 meter title, running a meet record and program record of 1:46.97. Later in the day, the distance medley squad of freshman Emmett Engelhardt, freshman Gregory Celariste, Morgan, and senior Kaden Kluth took the title at the line in a meet record of 9:49.59, beating runners-up Boston University by .23 seconds. Kaden Kluth earned more hardware as well, running 4:06.02 in the mile for the bronze medal.

Morgan was also named Patriot League Men's Track Athlete of the Meet. He is the second Eagle to ever win this honor, and the first since 2004.

Coaches' Corner
"We had an excellent weekend of competition at the Patriot League Championships this weekend," said head coach Sean Graham. "Men, women, all event groups ran very, very well. It was thrilling. Nearly every one of our athletes ran personal bests among others marching up our top-five lists, scoring points, getting on the podium, winning and setting meet records.

"The Patriot League has very quickly gotten to be one of the more competitive conferences in the nation. What it takes now to make a final, score points, and get on the podium is equivalent if not better than much of the Power 4 conferences. It's both very exciting and very challenging! Yet our athletes stepped up and are doing exactly those things. Please, please read through the PR performances and top fives at the bottom of our press release — the vast success these athletes achieved this weekend is admirable.

"To highlight a few big ones: In the mile, freshman phenom Shealyn Brochu raced with great savvy to qualify for the final, then today scored in the very competitive final. Kaden Kluth did the same in his prelim and then kicked hard in his mile final for a bronze medal, less than a second off the win in a tactical race. In the men's 5k, Cooper Michaud had a massive PR of 16 seconds to race to a seventh place finish in a very physical race. The grit it took to achieve that was impressive. The men's 4x800 had a good race, with some challenges early on but found a way to finish in fifth place with standout runs from freshman Daden Grogan and sophomore Zack Zerbe, putting more points on the board for the men.

"The most decisive race of the day came from senior Carver Morgan in the men's 800. After effectively making the final the day before, Carver once again took the race into his own hands, competing very aggressively and winning handily, leading wire-to-wire in a new school record, new Patriot League meet record, and now 24th in the nation.

"Not long after that, he was joined by Kaden and freshmen Emmett Engelhardt and Gregory Celariste in the men's DMR. These four men ran a phenomenal relay in which Kaden got the baton with the leaders, Boston and Navy. He then ran a perfectly executed 4:04 mile, with a distinct and aggressive move with 250 meters to go to take the lead and run away from the field for the win and set a new meet record.

"The final highlight of the meet goes to Carver Morgan as well. Because of his record setting wins in both the 800 and DMR, he was selected by the Patriot League as the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet. This is the first one we've had in over 24 years and only the second ever. A remarkable weekend for him and well-deserved award.

"Again, all in all it was a phenomenal weekend for our teams. They will all get a little reprieve this week before we start back preparing for the outdoor season later this month. If this weekend hints at anything toward outdoor, we're in for a very exciting spring!"
