Women’s Basketball Back on the Road at Army

WASHINGTON –– Heading into the final three weeks of the regular season, American University women's basketball heads north to West Point to face Army on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles and Black Knights meet for the second time this season at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

Series History
  • American and Army have taken to the court 53 times in their history; The Eagles boasts a narrow 28-25 victory margin over the Black Knights, including a 16-11 lead in Bender Arena.
  • Between 2018-22, AU had won nine straight against AWP before the luck swapped. Since the second meeting of the teams in 2022, American has lost all but one of the proceeding seven games, taking a victory on the road in West Point in 2024. As it stands now, the Black Knights have won four in a row over the Eagles, including the first matchup in Bender in January that saw the Black Knights win 63-56.
  • In that game, Molly Driscoll hit the 20-point marker, scoring 20 to lead the squad. She also led the team in assists with four. Driscoll's 20 points tied with Camryn Tade to lead all players on the hardwood.
  • Army was led by Tade with 20, Reese Ericson with 17 and Kya Smith with 13.
  • AU's Charlotte Tuhy led all players with 12 rebounds.
  • Turnovers at the start of both halves led to significant point deficits for the Eagles: 10 of the team's 14 turnovers in the game came in quarters one and three.
  • American led three times throughout the game, including a one-point lead at halftime, but trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half.
Tipping Off
  • The Eagles are in need of a win, currently riding a three-game loss streak with a loss on the road to Bucknell to open February before falling to Navy and Lehigh, ranked second and third in the Patriot League, respectively, at home. The loss to Navy on Wednesday night saw the Eagles fall 79-51.
  • The Eagles started out the game with back-to-back buckets to go up four, but then, the Mountain Hawks went on an 18-0 run that the Eagles found themselves unable to recover from throughout the remainder of the game.
  • Sophomore guard Madisyn Moore-Nicholson led AU for scoring, with 15 points. Fellow sophomore Molly Driscoll went 60 percent from the floor, making six of ten attempts, ultimately putting herself at 13 points to end the game with.
  • Charlotte Tuhy led the team with a total of seven rebounds, five of which came within the first quarter against the Mountain Hawks.
  • Tuhy leads the league in rebounds, averaging 10.9 per game, as well as averaging 10.9 ppg for a double-double. The freshman forward is currently 10th overall in the NCAA for rebounds with a total of 262. She is now the third all-time at AU in rebounds in a single season. She ranks third in the Patriot League in blocks (27). Tuhy has been named PL Rookie of the Week three times so far this season.
  • Moore-Nicholson has had 15 double-digit games so far this season, nine within the Patriot League, and has seen a total of three games scoring 20+ points for the Eagles. The guard averages 10.8 ppg and has 26 three-pointers from the season, the second highest on the team, behind classmate Driscoll.
  • Fellow guard Driscoll leads the Eagles on the offense, averaging 12.6 ppg and shooting .383 from the field; she is ranked 12th in the league for scoring. Driscoll is seventh in the league for three-pointers (40) and tenth in steals.
  • The Eagles are seventh in the Patriot League, and are eighth in the league for scoring, averaging 55.5 points per game; ranking ninth defensively, allowing 65.9 ppg, and creating a scoring margin of –10.4.  In comparison, the Army's scoring average is 9.4 ppg, where they rank first defensively.
  • American is ranked ninth in the Patriot League for team field goal percentage (.361) and opponent field goal percentage (.431). In contrast, the Black Knights are third in the league from the field, averaging .419 and are ranked eighth in league for limiting opponent field goal percentage (.416).
  • AU ranks in the middle of the league in three-pointers made (147), just behind Army's Black Knights, who rank fourth with 169 made from the long range. Army averages 32.8 percent compared to the Eagles 26.7 percent from the three-point range.
Scouting the Black Knights
  • The Black Knights will host American, coming off a 69-62 road win against Boston University on Wednesday, creating a three-game win streak for the Black Knights. Army is now second in the Patriot League with a 10-3 record and is 19-5 overall.
  • In their most recent win against the Terriers, guards Reese Ericson (19), Camryn Tade (17), and Taylor Wilson (10) scored double digits to get the team their tenth win of the Patriot League season.  
  • Ericson scored a season-high 19 points, scoring six out of 11 field shots and making a career-high six threes. Ericson currently ranks 14th in the PL with 11.1 ppg, leads the league from the long range with a total of 71 three-pointers so far this season, and is second in the league in three-point percentage at .413.
  • Junior forward Kya Smith grabbed a total of 6 assists in the game against Boston; she currently is third the team for assists and ranks first on the team for field range shooting 54.1 percent. Smith leads the team in scoring, ranking ninth with an average of 13.1 ppg.
  • Fellow guard for Army, Tade is ranked just behind her teammate, tenth in the PL with 13.1 ppg. The junior leads the league from the free throw line (.823), sixth from the long range (.377), and tenth in assists.
  • The Black Knights are strong on defense, ranking first in the league in scoring, averaging 56.0 points allowed per game. The team ranks first in turnover margin (3.33), and second in combined opponent rebounds (30.4). On the offense, the team remains strong, ranking third in offense scoring averaging 65.4 ppg, third from the field goal range with 41.9 percent, and third in three-point percentages with 32.8 percent.
